Hands-On Art, Class #10, Period 1

When the students arrived to class today, they'd see a lump of clay sitting on each of their desks. Yes, it was a huge mystery what they were doing today.

"Welcome back, everyone, hope you had a great Thanksgiving," Lily greeted the class. "Or if you're not American and didn't celebrate, hope you had a good four days off anyway, courtesy of the gool ol' USA."

"We're doing something a little different today, and that something is called scuplture. It's 3-D art, which means instead of being something that's just painted on a flat surface, it has actual real dimension to it. You've all seen what I'm talking about. The Greek, Asian, Egyptian cultures, et cetera, et cetera all have them dating way back. Michaelangelo did it, Picasso did it, and even if you're not from here you probably have something like this in your own culture. Even bowls and vases can come from clay and some of those are definitely art. You can use pretty much anything to make a sculpture, whether it's wood or metal or, you know, some people make a good- or, pretty okay maybe- living off of garbage sculptures. But we're going to be using your standard clay because it's easier to work with, and it's messy and that's the fun of it.

"As usual, I don't care what you make, as long as you don't just leave a lump of clay there and say you're making a statement or something. Try to make a sculpture of a face, make a little figurine, make something that's completely nonsensical as long as your clay looks like something other than what it is right now. Oh, and no eating the clay." Lily paused, looked slightly embarrassed, and said, "Sorry. Habit."

Peter didn't hear her. He kept drawing, working on his second page of sketches now.

Peyton put down her clay and walked over to him cautiously. She was afraid to touch him, but she tried to catch a glimpse of what he was doing.

Peter didn't notice her. He remained focused on his drawing, which was that of a building.

Peyton looked around to see if anyone else had noticed what was going on. No one seemed to as yet, so she turned her attention back to Peter. He didn't seem to be in pain, so for the moment she decided to just stay close and watch him carefully.

Peter finally snapped out of it. He blinked, his eyes returning back to normal, and stared at what he'd drawn. "O... kay."

Peyton put a hand on his arm to hopefully steady him. "You okay?" she said softly. "Your eyes went all white and..."

She shook her head. "It totally freaked me out."

"Sorry," Peter said. He raked a hand through his hair. "It's one of my powers. That's why I'm taking this class. I thought maybe it'd help me get a better handle on it."

Peyton raised an eyebrow. "You have a power that makes your eyes go white and draw like a madman?"

"I draw the future," Peter said. "Only I don't have any control over what I draw. Most of the time it's random pictures of people I don't even know."

Peyton turned to look back at the drawings. "The future? That's kind of cool and frightening at the same time. You recognize anything?"

Peter flipped through this sketches. "This looks like... a hotel? And this one's Sam but he's just walking. As you can see, these aren't always useful."

"So... maybe you and Sam are going to go spend some time in a nice hotel?" Peyton suggested, trying to lighten the mood a little.

"I did mention something about that for New Year's," Peter said. He studied the pictures again. "Doesn't look like New York though."

Peyton looked at it and shook her head. "Nothing I recognize.

"We may never know," Peter said. He took one last look at the drawing of Sam, then put his sketchbook away. "At least it wasn't a picture of someone getting hurt."

"Has that happened before?" Peyton asked gently.

[identity profile] repeterpetrelli.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"I just worry about it," Peter said. "I'd hate to draw something where somebody needed help and I have no idea who they are or how to help them."

Re: Play! I mean, Work!

[identity profile] darkangelsawyer.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Peyton nodded. "Yeah, that would worry me too."

"Sorry about freaking you out," Peter said.

Re: Play! I mean, Work!

[identity profile] darkangelsawyer.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She shrugged. "Don't worry about it. I'm just glad you're all right. I was afraid - well, that you needed help and I didn't know what to do."

"From what I know all you can do is wait it out," Peter said. "Not even Nathan could get me to snap out of it."

Re: Play! I mean, Work!

[identity profile] darkangelsawyer.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Peyton nodded. "Then I did okay. I just stood close by in case you needed something."

"You did perfect," Peter assured her.

Re: Play! I mean, Work!

[identity profile] darkangelsawyer.livejournal.com 2008-12-02 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiled. "I'm just glad you're okay. Is there anything you need now? Water or anything?"

"I'm good," Peter said. "Guess I'll just have to work quick to try to get some sculpting in by the end of class."
