Hands-On Art, Class #10, Period 1

When the students arrived to class today, they'd see a lump of clay sitting on each of their desks. Yes, it was a huge mystery what they were doing today.

"Welcome back, everyone, hope you had a great Thanksgiving," Lily greeted the class. "Or if you're not American and didn't celebrate, hope you had a good four days off anyway, courtesy of the gool ol' USA."

"We're doing something a little different today, and that something is called scuplture. It's 3-D art, which means instead of being something that's just painted on a flat surface, it has actual real dimension to it. You've all seen what I'm talking about. The Greek, Asian, Egyptian cultures, et cetera, et cetera all have them dating way back. Michaelangelo did it, Picasso did it, and even if you're not from here you probably have something like this in your own culture. Even bowls and vases can come from clay and some of those are definitely art. You can use pretty much anything to make a sculpture, whether it's wood or metal or, you know, some people make a good- or, pretty okay maybe- living off of garbage sculptures. But we're going to be using your standard clay because it's easier to work with, and it's messy and that's the fun of it.

"As usual, I don't care what you make, as long as you don't just leave a lump of clay there and say you're making a statement or something. Try to make a sculpture of a face, make a little figurine, make something that's completely nonsensical as long as your clay looks like something other than what it is right now. Oh, and no eating the clay." Lily paused, looked slightly embarrassed, and said, "Sorry. Habit."

Claire half listened, but she was kneading little clay balls under the desk the whole time.

Ned made his little pile of clay into a small mountain of clay.

Inara started working with the clay as she listened to the lecture.

Alice was definitely playing with her clay.

Jenny was not playing with her clay, because she was eying it warily, as if wondering what the catch was or whether it might explode.

Claire took the clay and started just playing with it. Inspired by her look at her childhood work over the weekend, she wondered if she could make a replica updated Blue Pajama Man, so she started rolling limbs. It certainly wasn't hard.

Ned had made pinch pots in Longburrow so, since that's what he knew, that's what he started making.

Peter started to work with his clay, really he did. But something kept flickering in front of his eyes. Before he knew it he'd grabbed his sketchbook and started to draw. He was oblivious to anything else around him. If anyone looked at him they'd see his eyes were milky white.

Bender cut together a few brick shapes from his clay and started piecing them together into- well, he was working on that part.

Sokka worked on his clay with a look of intense concentration, shaping a beautiful sculpture of Mel (http://violentred.net/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=333181&g2_serialNumber=1).

Peyton took some clay and began playing with it. She enjoyed the feel of it under her hands.

Angela picked out a lump of clay, that she proceeded to mould into a vaguely humanoid form.

People were always the most interesting subjects as far as she was concerned.

Cal was planning on just rolling a bunch of clay into snakes, and calling his artwork just that Snakes. Many of Them, but once he got started, he found himself trying to make a pair of sculptures, using snakes for the hair of Medusa and then making another figure who was clearly caught in her stony gaze.

The other figure which seemed to just lump over whenever Cal tried to stand him erect.

"Damn it," he muttered. "You're supposed to be petrified, stop falling over!"

Inara decided to try sculpting an ear, figuring that it had to be easier than concentrating on a whole face.

The first thing Robin did was make a clay mustache and stuck it to his face. He may have had a bit too much sugar before class.

Alice was making chess pieces. And having them argue with one another.
