Hands-On Art, Class #10, Period 1

"Morning, class," Lily greeted everyone when the last person had arrived. "So it's two days before Thanksgiving and who actually wants to be here today yeah I thought so. I'll tell you what. I'm going to go easy on you, and today you get a movie, and I've got sugar cookies. Ignore that they are holiday-themed, blame consumerism. The movie's about an artist, so we're on topic. And if you're really ambitious, you can take notes and look like you're working. Enjoy the movie, have a great holiday, and don't kill anyone at the stores on Friday."

Ned grabbed a cookie and half watched the movie, half thought about what he was going to do for the holiday.

Liir made his way over with an apologetic nod of his head.

"Sorry I missed the club last week," he said.

"It's okay," Ned said, keeping his voice low. "We just made pies and I'm pretty sure you know how to make those with your eyes closed."

[Notifications=FAIL. I apologize if I miss a ping.]

[same here, man *shakes fist at LJ*]

He nodded.

"Not quite with my eyes closed. They wouldn't look very nice that way."

He was making a joke.

"Well, true," Ned had to admit. "Everything all right?"

"I was feeling under the weather," he admitted. "Just fine now, though. How're you?"

"I'm finding it hard to complain right now," Ned said, surprised. "And I can usually do that without thinking. Sorry you were feeling bad, though. That's something I've managed to avoid, knock on wood."

"If you like," he said with a blink.

Then he continued.

"Well, I'm glad of that, for you. Are, uh, you going back for Thursday? The holiday?"

"Going back home?" He shook his head. "Nothing there for me, anyway."

He nodded.

"Me neither," he admitted. "And the holiday doesn't exist where I'm from anyway."

He gave Ned a faint, mildly apologetic smile.

"Good to know one person will be around at least."

"I'll be around," he confirmed. "No idea what I'll be doing but I'm sure you and I won't be the only ones. If we are, well, we'll just cook in the common room or something."

"Sounds like a plan to me. I've been trying to stay out of my room of late."

"I don't mind mine but yeah, definitely less boring if I go out of it," he agreed. "Being social is kind of hard."

"Terribly," he agreed. "Though... I do have a date Friday."

He smiled as he thought of it.

"Oh yeah?" Ned returned his grin. "Uh, with who if I can ask and it's not an intrusion."

He ducked his head and his voice was very very low.

"Amber," he admitted with a smile.

"I think I met her once," Ned said, keeping his own voice quiet. "She's nice. I bet you guys will have fun."

"She's very nice," he agreed, "I just hope I don't bore her to tears."

"I'm not really one to giving dating advice but most girls wouldn't agree to a date if they didn't really want to go, I don't think," Ned said.

"I hardly know how any of this works. The first person I dated was a boy and things were... well, I don't know, a little more straightforward."

Because doing laundry together and accidentally falling into the tub was the stuff of romantic legend. Yes.

"I know what I've read in Nanny's old romances, but I don't think girls like you falling over laughing in the middle of things. Or anyone, for that matter."

"Unless they told a really good joke?" Ned tried. "Maybe they'd like it then. Make them feel like it was a really really good joke."

"There's that," he agreed with a nod.

"I'm not very good at talking, though."

"Is she?" Ned asked.

Liir nodded.

Rather.

"So, maybe you can just listen?" Ned suggested. "And sort of jump in when you feel comfortable?"
