Introductory Superhuman Physics, Period 4 [11-18]

"Pyrokinesis," Jean-Paul began today's lecture, "is the ability to control fire psionically. It is not necessarily the ability to start the fire; this I believe is more properly referred to as 'pyrogenesis' or simply 'firestarting,' but that does not sound fancy enough for scientific work. There are two schools of thought about pyrogenesis; the first is that the firestarter transfers their own potential kinetic energy to the object they wish to inflame somehow. This seems unlikely to me; the firestarters I have known have not had the calorie intake problems that would come with--ahem--burning energy like that. Pardon the pun. The second is telekinesis on the molecular level, agitating the molecules into ignition. This seems more scientifically likely. Pyrokinesis is very poorly understood, as if it is energy manipulation, it does not make sense that a person would only be able to control fire. But there you have it.

"Cryokinesis is the ability to control cold and create ice, and is problematic due to the question of where the heat energy goes when it is removed from whatever is being chilled by the superhuman in question. Thermokinesis is the broad term for these abilities and any others involving the manipulation of heat energy. There are some interesting and unusual abilities that fall under this general umbrella, for instance, I once taught a boy with his head on fire.

"General rule of thumb," Jean-Paul said, and moved to write on the board. First he wrote 'Fire______.' "This person will be a firestarter." Then he wrote '____fire.' "This person may just think it sounds cool, but do not bet against it. Snowbird's powers have nothing to do with snow, but Iceman's do. Also, ice. Your mission for today, should you choose to accept it, is to come up with a heat-related superpower you would like to have, beyond basic pyrokinesis or cryokinesis."

Viki blinked mildly as she considered what he was talking about.

Gavin hadn't really thought about controlling fire in anyway but preventing it from spreading so he paid close attention.

From the look on Katchoo's face, you'd probably think it was a very, very good thing that she couldn't control fire in any way.

A class about WARREN! YAY! Momoko listened and wondered if Warren knew how he did it. And did he have a superhero name?

Viki considered that. "The ability to travel between flames?" she tried, somewhat dubiously.

"Transport through fire," she said, with a nod.

"Would we count the ability to not get hurt by fire in this?" Peter asked.

"I just mean to not get hurt by your own powers," Peter said. "I mean it's great to thwart your enemies by setting their evil layer on fire, not as great if you die of smoke inhalation doing it. So if I was designing a fire power, that's something I'd include."

"Uh," Gavin said, trying to think of something. "The ability to breathe fire like a dragon?"

Francine... is Francine. "The ability to bake stuff in your hands?" she suggested.

"I already can throw fireballs," Warren mused. "It would be interesting to be able to put out fires just as easily as I start them, though."

Buckets of water weren't always as handy as one might hope.

"How about the ability to make fire come out of other people's ears," John said.

"Setting things on fire when you touch them," said Katchoo with that same slightly worrisome look in her eyes, "would be pretty cool."

And not just to light cigarettes, either.

". . . but not everything. Just when you choose to."

"Hmm. Do lasers count? Because laser eyes would be cool. But I guess that's more light than actual fire." Momoko considered the question seriously. "I guess, though, I would like the ability to control fires. Like move it from place to place? Also if someone throws fire at you, you can wave your hand and it will miss! Shwoosh!" She waved her hand slowly, and leaned as if avoiding a fireburst.
