The Library; Monday. [ 11/17 ]

It seemed to come in waves, really, the levels of Cal's despair and joy. At the moment, he was definitely leaning more heavily toward joy. He'd absolutely massacred Amber in Scrabble last night. Well, maybe massacre was a little strong, but a win was a win and now he'd have to come up with a good thing for her to pay her back with. It had to be good. Real good.

But for now, there was the sipping of heavily sugared coffee and the sorting of books.

As he sorted books at the desk, Cal wondered if he could glean any good ideas for a payback for his win from the titles.

The desk has been abandoned for the pursuit of shelving books, but Cal's got an ear out for anyone entering the library.

Not like he ever managed to help anyone ,but still.

Back at his desk, Cal took a break from trying to figure out what Amber owed him and instead tried to get started on his article for this week.

So their last conversation had gotten all strange at the end, and Claire was fairly sure she came out of it looking really dumb, and she was going to bolt at the first sign of weirdness, seriously.

"...Hi." She accompanied this with a tiny wave.

Cal glanced up from his failed attempts to write.

He blinked.

"Claire. Hi."

With everything going on in his head Friday, he had practically forgotten about Thursday, but it was coming back around to hit him full force now that Claire was actually coming to see him at the library.

Nooo, she had to just be getting more college stuff, right, and it just so happened to be his day at the library and she didn't want to be rude.

"So, uh, books," she almost yelped as she picked a random interest, "on ..... photography. What section would they be in?"

She was actually there to see him. She just needed to feel him out, first.

"Um, down that way," Cal said, pointing it out, "then hang a left, then a right; most of them are in the first three stacks in that area. Studying up on it a little?"

"There, left, right," Claire repeated. "And yeah, kind of. I think I talked my boss into letting him help with the frat calendar ~~even though we haven't quite finished the thread yet~~. Figured reading a little would help me not sound like an idiot."

"Oh, God," Cal couldn't help the whithering groan, hiding behind his hand a moment.

Friday had made him forget everything about Thursday, pretty much. Including...

"The frat calender," he muttered with a small amount of embarrassed misery, wondering if he was really so desperate to declare I Am Male as to join a frat.

And, yes, yes he was.

Claire eyed him. "... don't tell me you're modeling."

Not that he wasn't cute enough. Just.

Another groan and Cal brought his hands up to run through his hair. "Thirteen guys in the frat," he said. "I could have been in the clear, and, I don't know, designed the layout as contribution, but turns out Chad and Teddy are going to double up for one of the months because it's their anniversary or some shit."

Claire considered this. "I guess that's sweet," she said, suspicious as she always was of such things. "For Teddy and Chad, I mean. And hey, I don't think Ben's the type to make it too super cheesy."

"...I've been promised a winter month," Cal said, because that was important in making him feel better about the whole thing, "although maybe we'd be better off just putting me on February, since that's the shortest, and thinking of people having my image displayed for even twenty-eight days is just weird."

But at least he'd be clothed for it. It still made him feel incredibly awkward, but it ran too much risk of suspicion if he'd objected.

"But if it's February you'd have to be the Valentine," Claire pointed out. "Go for November. You could do an ironic pilgrim thing."

"Ironic pilgrim?"

Really, Cal had to ask on that one.

"Ummmm." Claire didn't actually know what she had meant. "Like, you know, you're a pilgrim but it's ironic. Like ... something with Native Americans dying of smallpox in the background. Or a chastity belt. Or something that kind of makes fun of that part of history."

"Or I could be the Native American dying of smallpox," Cal mused, but then realized that that didn't do much for his shirtless clause.

"Maybe I should just do...October. Dress me up in a nice suit, and I look pretty freaking good, if I can say so myself." He pulled the lapels of his usual jacket as if to emphasize that. "Neutral enough."

"Check you out," Claire half-teased. "And you have awesome bone structure. I bet you photograph well, Cal."

What? It was only true.

Cal ducked his head a little with his grin. "Maybe," he said, any of that cockiness of a fleeting second easily gone with his embarrasment. "You go and study up on photography a bit more and see if you can still say that."

"What, so I know what I'm talking about?" Claire was amused. "Yeah, I'll go get a couple books." She headed toward the stacks.

"If you get lost," Cal called out after her, "just remember, moss grows on the north side!"

Or something; it wasn't like he was ever in Cub Scouts or anything. Still, Cal had to smile a bit dopily after Claire for a moment until he realized what he was doing, and went back to just burying his face in his hand and reminding himself that he was an idiot-freak who now had no chance of getting an article out now.

Cal's stepped out for a smoke break and a sammich, so the library's only open to other aides and Doctor Jones.

Cal was nibbling at some of his sammich still left over from lunch, and wishing he had a pop, and not getting any more work done at all.

Fifth period was the worse; Cal always got so antsy.

He was using that anxious energy very productively by staring at the ceiling and counting the holes in the tiles.

No-to-slow play during the day, but no-to-slow is looooooooooove.

It took me a minute to realize this (http://i34.tinypic.com/2hdw802.png) was an icon glitch. I don't know why it took me a minute but it did.
