Hands-On Art, Class #8, Period 1
When the students got to class, they'd find the floor covered in tarp. No, they hadn't wandered into any shows about serial killers, Lily was just worried about whether possible permanent stains on the art room floor would come out of her paycheck.
"Morning, class," Lily greeted everyone. "I have nothing topical to bring up today, so let's get right to it, hm? Today we are covering abstract expressionism. We covered abstract art a few weeks ago, but abstract expressionism was a movement in the post-World War II days kind of specific to our country. America represent. One of the big figures in that period was Jackson Pollock," she went on, passing out some handouts of his work, "who was best known for laying canvas down and pouring paint on it. Sometimes there'd be sand or broken glass. Which just goes to show you, you can pretty much make anything art, kids.
"So today we are going to embrace our inner Jackson Pollock. Go ahead and lay out your canvases on a hard surface, if you need to use the floor or a table or just have someone hold it up against the wall for you or whatever. You won't be using brushes, but we have sticks and things to work with instead. You're going to pour paint, drip paint, whatever you feel like doing, I did bring things like sand and small rocks, so if you want to ge some texture in there, feel free. Just go nuts and have fun."
