Hands-On Art, Class #8, Period 1

When the students got to class, they'd find the floor covered in tarp. No, they hadn't wandered into any shows about serial killers, Lily was just worried about whether possible permanent stains on the art room floor would come out of her paycheck.

"Morning, class," Lily greeted everyone. "I have nothing topical to bring up today, so let's get right to it, hm? Today we are covering abstract expressionism. We covered abstract art a few weeks ago, but abstract expressionism was a movement in the post-World War II days kind of specific to our country. America represent. One of the big figures in that period was Jackson Pollock," she went on, passing out some handouts of his work, "who was best known for laying canvas down and pouring paint on it. Sometimes there'd be sand or broken glass. Which just goes to show you, you can pretty much make anything art, kids.

"So today we are going to embrace our inner Jackson Pollock. Go ahead and lay out your canvases on a hard surface, if you need to use the floor or a table or just have someone hold it up against the wall for you or whatever. You won't be using brushes, but we have sticks and things to work with instead. You're going to pour paint, drip paint, whatever you feel like doing, I did bring things like sand and small rocks, so if you want to ge some texture in there, feel free. Just go nuts and have fun."

Ned decided this type of art wasn't hard at all. It was hard to make a mess look...messy. Or something.

Sokka took careful notes. And then, in the spirit of the class, crumpled the paper and poured paint onto it.

Wait, so they were just supposed to make a mess? Jenny could do that! Why hadn't anyone told her that was art sooner?

Katchoo, perhaps unsurprisingly, chose to use the lecture time to fill a couple more pages in her sketchbook.

Not because she thought Lily was a pretentious fraud we're looking at you, Foster Wolfe, but because come on, it was abstract. How hard could it be?

Alice was enjoying art more every week.

Liir listened... and wondered how it might be to be in the presence of a piece of art like that. There had to be more to it than that, after all, right?

Ned laid out a canvas, rolled up his sleeves and grabbed some green paint. And then he started splattering it around the canvas in sharp slashes and random, odd drips of dots.

Of course some of the paint got on him. A lot of the paint, actually.

Spattering paint and making a mess was highly appealing to Peyton today, so she got to work with a vengeance.

Might not want to stand too close.

Peter wondered what it would be like if he used his powers to move the paint around.

He made sure to stand away from the others in case this went horribly wrong.

Claire was glad that she'd left Penelope in the room to go to class. She drizzled paint onto the canvas, then sprinkled on some sand for texture.

Savannah was glad that she had left Johnny!Lynx back in the room because baby lynx + paint would have = disaster.

Cal could deal with this; this was nice and easy and kind of fun, and he just went about splattering paint in a way that looked a lot more thoughtful and in depth than it really was.

Sokka leaned his canvas against the wall at an angle, mixed some sand into different cans of paint, and started taking large handfuls of sandy paint and throwing them at the canvas as hard as he could. It... was messy.

Katchoo set down her canvas as far away from people as she could, and proceeded to throw paint on it by the . . . okay, not the bucketful, but definitely by the cupful. And handful. And occasional footful.

Oh, something simple and involving very little concentration. Angela was a fan.

She was starting to feel distinctly like she was coming down with something, and was highly unimpressed by that idea.

Bender set a can of paint in the centre of his canvas on the floor. He gathered up a few rocks and tossed them into it, watching the paint splash out.

Robin first dumped some debris onto the canvas, then poured green paint over it. Then he waited for it to dry.

Alice was dipping her hands in the paint and flinging them towards the canvas as one might shake off one's hands after washing them. The sand made a lovely texture, overtop.

...Liir used a lot of green, a lot of blue, and a lot of wheat brown and grey.

It was an interesting piece.
