Library [11/06]

One nice thing about having been a library aide for so long was that Sam could go through all the motions of opening up and starting the day without having to actually think about what he was doing. That made it much easier on days like today, when all of his thoughts were about how Dean was doing with Ben and them getting back safely.

"Hey." Peter put the coffee and the bag on the counter. "I brought food. With Dean gone I figured you'd need lunch."

"You didn't have to do that," Sam said, although the way he looked at the bag might have made it apparent that he really appreciated the food.

"Wanted to," Peter countered. "Besides, this way I get the fun of having lunch with you, even if it is late."

"Late is fine as long as it means I still get you," Sam said, going and sitting down. "What did you bring?"

"Sandwiches, chips, nothing fancy," Peter said. "I'll admit I thought about pizza but I figured that might be too messy around the books."

"Probably, yeah," Sam said, leaning over to give Peter a kiss. "I didn't want to forget that."

"Forgetting would be bad," Peter agreed, kissing Sam back. "Hey."

"Hey. I'm really glad you came by today," Sam said. "I mean, more glad than usual."

"Thanks," Peter said. "What'd I do?"

"Well, you put extra thought into everything because you knew Dean wouldn't be here," Sam pointed out.

"I'm in love with you," Peter pointed out. "It comes with the territory."

Hearing those words still made Sam blush and feel a little rush of happiness. "I just wanted to you know that I appreciate how you look out for me," he said.

"Anytime," Peter assured him with a smile.

"So, are you going to be okay without me this weekend?" Sam asked, digging into his chips first.

"I'll spend some time with Nathan," Peter said. "See if he and I can form a plan of attack for Thanksgiving."

"For the record, you're welcome to stay here and have Thanksgiving with us if that wouldn't make things worse," Sam said. He wasn't sure if he had permission for that, but he'd deal with it later if he didn't.

"I can't leave him alone with Mom," Peter said. "It wouldn't be fair."

"You're going to make sure you both come back in one piece, right?" Sam asked. "Don't let her get to you."

"I'll do my best," Peter promised. "I... I'd invite you but that's probably not a great idea right now."

"I'd tell you no anyway," Sam said. "I'd only make things worse, and I want you and your mom to work things out. We'll try it one thing at a time this time around."

"You know it doesn't mean anything for how I feel about you, right?" Peter asked. "I still love you."

"I never doubt that. Ever," Sam assured him. "Would I feel better if your mother approved? Yeah, of course. But I know it doesn't change how you feel. You're not like that."
