Sex Ed, Wednesday, Period 2, Class #8

At the front of the classroom, a table was set up with an assortment of baby accessories; clothes, bottles, diapers and carriers.

Edward stood at the front of the classroom holding a baby doll. "I hope you enjoyed your family visits. After this week's project, you may appreciate your parents a little more. For the next seven days, you are all parents to your own babies." He held up the infant simulator and demonstrated how to "take care" of the baby, using the diapers and bottle made for the doll. The baby began to cry and Edward rocked it gently until it quieted.

"The bottle and diapers have sensors that register when the baby is being fed or changed," he said. "You will each have a wristband," he held up his arm to show the one he was wearing, "that will let the baby sense when you are near. All you have to do is keep the baby healthy and happy for one week and you'll get an A on this project. Which, by the way, is forty percent of your grade. These dolls are programmed to act just like a real child, so expect to be feeding and changing your little one at all hours. And don't try to mess around with the programming. If the doll is opened up, it will register as 'abused' and you will get an 'F' on the project."

"I've paired you off into couples for this. As 'husband' and 'wife' you will be equally responsible for the child's wellbeing." He paused. "Actually, we have a greater number of girls than boys in this class, so some of you girls will have to work together. Just assume you're sisters helping each other out while your husbands are off in the Army."

Once all the students had their babies, Edward said, "The rest of the period is free time for you to practice your parenting skills. I have baby carriers and other useful items here to help you with caring for your young one. If you need anything else during the week, you can stop by my office."

OOC, it's up to you how much you want to play out. I'm not going to check on you. I encourage you to play with it and find an IC babysitter if possible, but handwavily saying "someone watched the kid all week" is fine.

Also, the "parents" to each child will get graded on that child's "health", but Edward can't keep track of who takes care of the doll. Forming non-traditional family units is fine as long as the child is taken care of.

Cal couldn't help a snorting, agreeing grin at Amber's comment. "I don't know," he said, wondering if he really wanted a weird, fake-looking baby retaining his name. "It should be a Greek name," that much he knew. "It's tradition. There isn't a single member of my family who doesn't have a Greek name. Even my dad's real name isn't Milton. They just called him that after the poet; his real name was Miltiades after some Athenian general."

"I know. We can take your name and just extend it," she gave him a look, "can't we?"

Cal looked back. "It wouldn't be extending it," he reminded her. "Not a bad name, though. Calliope. It should be getting some use. We could name her after one of the other muses, too. How do you feel about Melpomene?"

Yes, he may have chosen the muse of tragedy on purpose.

No, he didn't imagine Amber would realize it.

Well, she said that more for the benefit of anyone who might be listening.

"Calliope it is, but not Melpomene. I don't know what it means and it sounds funny."

"You really want to do Calliope, then?" Cal asked. "A whole lexicon of Greek names and you want to stick with that one?"

"Calliope Amber Stephanides," she declared finally. "That's her name. And just so you know? I'm not changing any diapers."

That actually did have a really nice ring to it, but Cal could only appreciate the nomenclature for a moment.

"Hey, no!" he said. "This is a joint effort; we both have to do it all."

"Caaaaaal," she said, drawing his name out. "It's icky. I'll... bathe her and dress her and fix her hair." Amber glanced down. Okay, so there wasn't much hair to work with, but whatever. It was the offer that counted.

"And stick me with all the dirty work," Cal observed. "What about when, like, tomorrow, you have to take her because I have to work. I can't have a baby behind the counter with me. So in a situation like that, you won't have any choice."

"Tomorrow I'll feel better," she nodded.

Calliope started crying. Amber picked her up and started rocking her gently in her arms. "Who get's her tonight?"

"I can take her," Cal said with a nod. "You've got work today, and I've got it tomorrow, so that would make sense. And I guess one good thing about this is that, no matter who has her at night, the other will be up all night if she cries, too, since we're right next door."

"You're right," she smiled. "It's like we'll both be tuned in to her. And if you need me tonight, just come and get me, okay?" Yeah, Amber wasn't really thinking she'd be up at all tonight. She wanted to crash right now.

Cal nodded. "I think we'll be fine tonight. I'll stop by in the morning on my way to work to hand her back over to you..."

"If," he added, eying her, "you're still alive. I take it the night out with Hoshi was a technical success?"

"Works for me," she said.

"Yah, god, it was fun. I woke up this morning in the same clothes I wore last night and a shot glass stuck in my cleavage."

"What cleavage?" Cal asked, before he could think better of it.

Okay, her boobs weren't that small. When she wore the right bra, she had cleavage dammit!

As it was, Amber gaped at him.

Cal grinned, unable to contain it. "Aw," he said. "You're cute when you can't take a joke."

"You weren't joking," she said, turning around and giving him her back.

"You're daddy has an ugly mouth, Calliope. Don't listen to him. He likes to hurt mommy's feelings. Yes, he does."

Cal stared at Amber's back for a moment, caught in one of those moments where he had no idea if she was just messing with him, or if he really had upset her.

He decided that if she was getting upset over something small like that, then he'd risk pushing her buttons, because that was kind of ridiculous.

"And your mommy," Cal offered, "likes to use passive aggressive tactics to make daddy feel guilty about something that she's over-reacting to."

"Pfft, Calliope. Mommy never overreacts. Daddy secretly loves mommy's..." It felt wrong saying boobies to a fake baby. "...things. And if daddy's feeling guilty then it's because he knew he hurt mommy's feelings. I know... I know... men. Never get married, sweetheart."

"Uhh, I don't think there's any secret," Cal said, "about my," he dropped all the mommy's and daddy's because it was just weird, "love of her...'things.'"

Amber turned, grinned at him. "Yah? Sure they're not too small for you?"

The grin was an immense relief, but Cal didn't let it show on his face as he shook his head. "Nope," he said. "They're a very good size for my hands." He lifted up one as if to emphasize the point.

"You have small hands," she stated, her grin genuine. Seriously, talking about her boobs didn't really bother her. "And they are a little bigger for your mouth. At least there's that."

"I don't know," Cal said, thinking that he really shouldn't be thinking about in class. At least it was somewhat topical, if you pushed it a little. "I've got a pretty big mouth."
