Sex Ed, Wednesday, Period 2, Class #8

At the front of the classroom, a table was set up with an assortment of baby accessories; clothes, bottles, diapers and carriers.

Edward stood at the front of the classroom holding a baby doll. "I hope you enjoyed your family visits. After this week's project, you may appreciate your parents a little more. For the next seven days, you are all parents to your own babies." He held up the infant simulator and demonstrated how to "take care" of the baby, using the diapers and bottle made for the doll. The baby began to cry and Edward rocked it gently until it quieted.

"The bottle and diapers have sensors that register when the baby is being fed or changed," he said. "You will each have a wristband," he held up his arm to show the one he was wearing, "that will let the baby sense when you are near. All you have to do is keep the baby healthy and happy for one week and you'll get an A on this project. Which, by the way, is forty percent of your grade. These dolls are programmed to act just like a real child, so expect to be feeding and changing your little one at all hours. And don't try to mess around with the programming. If the doll is opened up, it will register as 'abused' and you will get an 'F' on the project."

"I've paired you off into couples for this. As 'husband' and 'wife' you will be equally responsible for the child's wellbeing." He paused. "Actually, we have a greater number of girls than boys in this class, so some of you girls will have to work together. Just assume you're sisters helping each other out while your husbands are off in the Army."

Once all the students had their babies, Edward said, "The rest of the period is free time for you to practice your parenting skills. I have baby carriers and other useful items here to help you with caring for your young one. If you need anything else during the week, you can stop by my office."

[It's the inevitable baby project! The dolls have programs that require them to be fed and changed at least every four hours. For more info on how these work, check out the YouTube links below.

OOC, it's up to you how much you want to play out. I'm not going to check on you. I encourage you to play with it and find an IC babysitter if possible, but handwavily saying "someone watched the kid all week" is fine.

Also, the "parents" to each child will get graded on that child's "health", but Edward can't keep track of who takes care of the doll. Forming non-traditional family units is fine as long as the child is taken care of.

Feeding.
Comforting the baby.
How the doll works.

Wait for OCD up!]

Claire gave the baby a slightly wary look and tried to think of a good name. It started to cry, and she fumbled for the key. "Of course we get the crying one."

"Ain't they all?" Kaylee pointed out, poking the baby slightly. Which only made it cry more.

Claire snorted out a half-laugh. "Sounds like it. Sleeping's going to suck this week."

She finally found the key and inserted it. It wasn't the gentlest caretaking ever, but the baby quieted.

She smiled. "It's kinda cute when it's quiet, though," she noted.

"Kind of, for a doll," Claire had to agree. She actually smiled a little bit as she looked down at their "son."

"So what do you want to call it?"

"Well. My name is long 'nough. I don't need t'go around namin' things after myself or nothin'," Kaylee said thoughtfully. "You got any preferences?"

"Plus it's a boy," Claire pointed out. "Not that it cares, but."

She considered the doll again. "I don't know. Keith?" The real Keith might kind of dig that.

"Awww, that's pretty!" Kaylee said, smiling. "That a real common name 'round these parts?" She'd never heard it before.

"It's, like, a normal name but not super-common," Claire decided. "I don't know if it means anything or whatever."

She rocked the baby a little. "Does Kaylee mean anything in your home?"

"I ain't sure," she admitted, watching Claire with the baby, "but Kaylee's a nickname, in any case. Short for Kaywinnit Lee. Don't tell no one."

Claire made a face. Yeah, that was a pretty bad name. "Your secret's safe with me," she promised. "It's kind of pretty as a word, but."

The doll was starting to "fall asleep" in her arms. "So should we trade off custody of Keith midway through the week, or what?"

"Works for me," Kaylee said, nodding happily. "I mean, it should mostly sleep, right? I ain't never cared for a real baby, let 'lone a mechanical one."

She considered for a moment. "...bet I could mess with it so it doesn't cry t'all. Hmm."

"I don't even babysit," Claire agreed.

She looked excited at Kaylee's suggestion. "Without Cullen being able to tell?" Oh, that would be cool.

"I ain't sure," she admitted. "I wouldn't be able t'modify it too much -- might just be a matter of snagging a component or somethin', an' then returnin' it when we give it back."

Re: Kaylee Frye/Claire Fisher

[identity profile] swipedthatfoot.livejournal.com 2008-10-29 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Claire considered this. "Too bad you can't make too many changes," she offered. "We could make a baby that shot lasers from its eyes."

"Or hovered," Kaylee said, grinning at the thought.

"If they didn't cry and hovered, I'd line up for a real one," Claire cracked. "Wanna take it first and see if you can make the modification?"
