Ethics [Tuesday, October 28, 2nd period]

"I trust your weekends with your families went as expected," Anakin said, slamming the door behind him as he stalked into the room.

"Love is patient, love is kind," he began, looking down at his notes, then snorted and made the universal symbol for "blah, blah, blah" with his hand.

He might secretly be a soft touch on the subject, but he was hoping no one in the room would call him on it.

"In the Jedi Order, we were taught that in order to maintain proper distance, to negotiate impartially across our galaxy, we were to strive for serenity, not passion. To be proper Jedi, we should not know anger, or hatred, or love."

The unholy mix of the three could lead to tossing grandsons through doors. Not that Anakin would talk about that either.

He crossed his arms over his chest and glanced around the room. "Is this an unreasonable standard to hold someone to? What do you think they were trying to prevent?"

"I think it would be very difficult," Ella began, frowning in concentration a little. "But I can see the value, for knights. Jedi wouldn't be held back by their own fears or personal ties; they could focus on what was best for the group."

"They were charged with bringing peace and justice to a galaxy. Could they be trusted with such a task if beings thought they might choose favorites?"

Ella frowned. "I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not," she ventured. She thought an answer was implied by what she had just said, but maybe there was a nuance she had missed. "Anyhow, I don't think having favorites -- or the possibility of them -- would automatically make anything they did unfair, but it certainly could add to distrust."

"You're not supposed to know if I agree," Anakin said with a maddening smile. "Jedi weren't called in for low-level negotiations. They were called in when because their neutrality was absolute. They had no allegiances to homeplanets or families."

The maddening smile was having what seemed to be its intended effect, at least, and Ella squirmed.

"That sounds lonely," she ventured. "Right, possibly. But lonely."
