Library [22.10]

After opening the library, and ducking off to class, Karal got his daily chores out of the way as quickly as he can so he could work on the latest lot of papers that had arrived from home.

He was deep in thought as he read using Altra's eyes, and both of them had a headache as a result, but he was interruptable should you have need of him.

But there is an Indiana Jones.Ready to serve no less.

In which there is a Karal, who is shelving books, his faithful Firecat by his side.

Ender had snuck into the library relatively early, to gather a few more of the sketchy books the library had on alien life.

So sketchy, you'd think this time hadn't even encountered any. "Hey, Karal," he did greet, when one pass brought him near the boy.

"Good morning," he replied, smiling as Altra put his feet on the shelf and stretched high, so Karal could shelve the book he was holding in the right place. "Can I help you find anything?"

"I've got most of what I was looking for," he said, halting to watch the relative spectacle of cat and priest. "For the time being. Unless you've got something on sailing you want to recommend."

"Well, there is one that I found very useful, but," he hesitated, wavering, then continued, "you might find it insulting."

"Unless it's going to try to insult my butt," Ender said, frankly, "I can risk it."

Karal laughed, held up a hand in a 'wait here' gesture, and followed Altra around the end of the shelf, returning a moment later with a bright yellow book (http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesTitle/Sailing-For-Dummies-2nd-Edition.productCd-0471791431.html). "There." He held it out to Ender.

Ender looked from Karal to the book and back again. "Well," he started, a smile tinging his features somewhat, "They're up front about the target audience. Sounds like a good place to start."

Karal half-grinned at him. "It seemed the safest place to start," he admitted. "And it was very helpful. I feel I am only half a dummy now about sailing."

"Half a dummy probably doesn't sink as hard," he said, "But don't test that."

He started to laugh. "No, I don't think I will." Altra gave Ender a disgusted look. "I've yet to find a book like that on rafting, but as I've got a teacher for that, I probably don't need one."

"You've got a good teacher," Ender said, with no real arrogance to it. "Unless you're really a dummy, or you don't put in the effort, we'll make it work."

"I'd have to agree," he replied easily. "So far, I'm completely not drowned, so it must be true."

In which there is still a Karal, though book shelving has given way to reading through the eyes of his faithful Firecat.

At some point Indy came back from a small trip to the Perk where he grabbed a cup of coffee for Karal and a small cup of cream for the faithful Firecat.

Altra looked up, nose twitching. :I hope that's for me.:

"So pushy, Altra," Karal said smiling and lifting his head. "And it's very hard to read when you stop looking at the page. How are you today?" he added to Indy.

"Good. Good," Indy said with a nod and a sip of his own coffee. "I think I'm finally getting the hang of things around here. Looking forward to this weekend at all?"

He also gave Altra a friendly nod. "And yes the cream is for you."

Altra licked his lips and said, :Thank you,: which Karal echoed.

"This weekend?" he asked, puzzled, then enlightenment arrived. "Parent's weekend, yes, I'd forgotten. It could be fun, I think."

"No one coming for a visit?" he asked. "Or were you able to dodge that bullet?"

"No, no one's coming," he replied. "People came for me last year, though. It was...odd, to say the least." He chuckled. "I might have to offer my room as a refuge for the weekend."

"Does it get that ugly around here?" Indiana asked with no small amount of amusement.

"No," he replied after a moment's thought, and grinned. "But having somewhere they can hide if they need to might make people feel better, even if they never use it."

"Wish I had that when I was in school with my dad," Indy chuckled. "Or anywhere for that matter."

"If you should need to hide this weekend, my door will be open," he said solemnly, then smiled again. "Though I wouldn't imagine you'll have to worry about parental visits. I think it's an experience reserved for students."

"And that," Indy said with a chuckle. "Is a very good thing."

In which Karal and his faithful Firecat did eat lunch.

In which there is a Karal, seated at the desk, speaking quietly into his recorder.

The faithful Firecat was faithfully asleep.

Jaina still had work to do, which was why she'd spent most of her morning on the comm. Afterwards, though, she headed down to the library. For no reason. Yeah. It shocked her, too.

She didn't want to interrupt what he was doing, so she hung back a little, clearing her throat instead.

Karal lifted his head automatically and clicked off the recorder. "Hello?" he said. "Did you need something?"

Altra twitched and stretched, but didn't wake up.

"Just me," she said, coming closer. "Sorry, bad time?"

"Jaina." He broke into a smile. "Not at all. I'm always happy to see you. Well, hear you, I guess, until Altra wakes up. How are you?"

"I'm okay. Long weekend, and I still haven't been able to tease you about missing my wedding." Hey, if Altra was going to sleep, she wasn't even going to bother keeping a straight face.

Karal's jaw dropped. "...what?" It was mostly a squeak.

Altra's ears twitched, but if he was awake, he wasn't admitting it.

Jaina tsk'ed. "I can't believe you didn't hear about it. It was sort of spur of the moment."

With a supreme effort, Karal didn't flail, closed his mouth, and tried not to show his shock. "Umm, congratulations," he ventured. "John?"

"Yes," she answered. "Though no congratulations are needed. The wedding sort of got ruined when Brooke and I beat each other up in the pond. And then she turned out to be my mother."

Jaina, stop being mean.

There was a sound that could almost have been a muffled snicker from Altra, who kept his head down on his paws and his eyes firmly closed. He was asleep, really.

Karal didn't notice. He opened his mouth, couldn't find any words, and closed it again with a noise that sounded a lot like grrfl.

Jaina had to laugh finally. "Sorry," she said. "Fandom went weird again. You did miss the wedding, though. I escaped on horseback."

"Escaped on..." He started to laugh from sheer relief. "Oh, Sunlord! Suddenly I'm glad I had to return to Valdemar. Is everything all right after the weirdness?"

Altra opened his eyes and stretched to his feet, wandering over to Jaina to offer his ears to be scratched.

"Morning, Altra," Jaina said, giving him scritches. "Yeah, everything's fine. It was absolutely ridiculous. Everything okay back home?"

"It's all right," he said after a moment's thought. "I didn't get married or in a fight with anyone, so perhaps it was better than here!" Altra purred and wound around her legs. "I was able to take Evey to Karse, to show her the temple at Sunhame, which made the entire trip worthwhile."

"Engaged! Not married!" she pointed out quickly. "Things like that really are sort of worth it. I'm glad to hear that." Of course, her boyfriend got to see things like kill zones and evacuations now.

"Engaged, then," he laughed. "I didn't do that either, so the point stands. And I do still want you to visit Valdemar some time. This trip was short notice, or I'd have asked you both to come."

"Just let me know me when," she shrugged. "I'm sort of in charge of my own trips home for a little while."

Look! Look! She was actually trying!

Karal ~~didn't find her at all trying!~~ nodded thoughtfully. "I'm glad to hear it. It's better to be able to have some control over that, if you can," he said. "And, if you don't schedule a quick trip this weekend to escape, I can offer you sanctuary in my room." He smiled widely. "I'm a priest, we're allowed to do that."

In which Karal and his Faithful Firecat do those tasks that must be done before the library is closed.

Yeah, I don't even know.
