Phys Ed: Week 6, Period 2 (Fri. 10/10)

Meeting in the Danger Shop, the class would possibly be surprised by old, sketchy bowling alley before them. Lucky for students, the concessions (while completely not real due to Danger Shopness) were open and free to all.

"Today you bowl. I've been told this is a time-honored Earth tradition involving beer, one-on-one combat, and broken fingers. For non-Earthlings, it's easy enough. Pick up the ball and toss it down the lane hitting all the pins." As Ronon spoke, he demonstrated, failing to use the finger holes in the ball as he sent it barreling down the lane, managing a strike for his trouble. "You break a finger, see Hannibal. No hitting people with the bowling ball unless it's necessary." He was kidding, sort of, but he said nothing about not hitting people with pins.

"Dress out and meet on the lanes."

This seemed like an utterly ridiculous sport, but Helen supposed she had to do it. It certainly wasn't anything she had any experience with.

Friday couldn't manage a strike. He kept getting splits and couldn't get both pins down at the end.

Hannibal wasn't caring that much about how good he was doing. He just kept trying to throw the ball as weirdly down the lane as he could.

"... Well, you definitely get style points," Eve said, trying not to laugh at a particularly weird throw of the ball.

Turtle was carefully trying to pick out a bowling ball that wasn't too heavy or too embarrassingly light, and wondering if anyone who wouldn't make fun of her mediocre game wanted to pair up. It was just more fun with someone else.

"Need someone to beat the pants off of you?" Sokka offered.

He leaned over, stuck his fingers in a ball without really paying attention to what weight it was, and... failed to stand up straight. After straining for a bit, he put his other hand on the ball and managed to pick it up. "These things are HEAVY!!!"

Turtle was laughing so hard it almost made her stomach hurt. She thought about telling Sokka that they were all like that, best stick with that one, but she couldn't be that dishonest in a game. Laugh petering out into a chuckle, she instead just said, "There are lighter ones. If you don't think you could handle that one."

Sokka blinked at her. "No, see, I see what you're doing. You're trying to appeal to my manly manliness in order to make me take the heavy ball. Sorry, but no. THIS man is gonna find the right balls to play with!"

He went looking for one with a lower number on it.

Turtle looked...vaguely impressed. "Secure enough in your manliness to not object to playing with other balls, huh?" she remarked.

No, she had no idea what she was saying there.

"YES!" Sokka insisted, picking up a ball and heading toward the lane. "...NO!!! Not like that! Not dirty!!!"

He probably should have stopped throwing the ball when he started flailing, because now it was in the gutter and he had a big, fat 0 on the scoreboard.

Turtle...was going to take that, although she turned a pretty vibrant pink once she realized what the flailing was about.

"I didn't mean it like that," she corrected quietly.

"Neither did I!" Sokka insisted.

His second throw was better -- it knocked over four pins. Sokka stared at the lane, momentarily distracted from the discussion of balls. "That didn't roll right," he mused. "Is there grease or something on the floor???"

"Something like that, yeah," Turtle nodded. "That's why you have to wear the special shoes."

[identity profile] sarcasm-guy.livejournal.com 2008-10-10 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"It doesn't explain why the shoes are so ugly."

"So that you don't steal them," Turtle said, simply, shrugging slightly as she stepped up to bowl her own first round. It wasn't the best, but it wasn't the greatest either, hugging the gutter until managing to knock over two pins.

Sokka dutifully clapped at her performance. "I wonder if anyone's thought to make bowling shoes that LOOK GOOD," he mused. "You could probably make some good money off of those."

Gwen knew bowling, and was rather good at it, so that was one thing at least.

Francine knew how to bowl (which was why she kind of blinked and stared at Mr. Dex's demonstration, but then, she was used to staring at Mr. Dex, and she wasn't going to complain) but that didn't mean she was remotely coordinated at it.

Still, she could send the ball in a wobbly run down the lane that nipped one pin before it spun into the gutter.

Since Lion-o wasn't from this planet and hadn't seen bowling before, he tried it the way Ronon demonstrated. The ball was too heavy for small Lion-o, so he ended up doing a two-handed toss, carefully avoiding putting his fingers in the weird holes in the ball.

The ball took a spinning trajectory and ended up in the gutter. "Aww, man!"

And he definitely wasn't wearing his gym uniform and bowling shoes, because he hadn't looked inside his locker hard enough to realize they were sitting at the bottom.

"I couldn't find one. Guess there weren't enough to go around." said Lion-o. He hadn't looked that hard to find one, though.

"Where is he getting this crap?" Rodney wondered as he hefted a bowling ball. He'd never played American style bowling before, but he doubted Dex was doing it right. Still, he stuck his fingers in the holes and threw the ball down the lane. It went directly into the gutter.

Dick knew bowling. He wasn't fantastic at it, but he would smugly call himself great if he were going to brag about it.

His score did not humble him at all. If anything it fed his ego a little.
