History in Living Colour - Friday, Period 3 (Week 6)

Upon entering the Danger Shop, the students were greeted with a door and a whiteboard. The messy writing, all in capital letters, read

'GO THROUGH THE DOOR ALONE OR IN PAIRS. MAKE FRIENDS. DON'T GET KILLED. WHEN THE PROGRAM FREEZES, YOU CAN LEAVE.

THE DOCTOR'

The Doctor wasn't present, but chances were he was around somewhere.

Gwen watched the man for a moment before trying out a hesitant "Hello?"

He looked at her, but didn't move at first. Then, as if having thought about it very carefully and then made a decision, he ignored her greeting and continued walking. He kept her sight the whole time, even going out of his way to do so.

That wasn't exactly promising. "You wouldn't happen to know where we are?"

The man set the bucket down near the door and turned to face her. He looked her up and down, as if sizing her up. His eventual response was short and clipped in tone, even if it was in very old Japanese.

Oh, bugger. "Uh, konichiwa?" Which was about the extend of her Japanese, old or otherwise.

He raised an eyebrow and stood his ground, then barked at her and signalled for her to go away. He was waving in the direction of the fields between here and the mountains. He said something else and then huffed and picked up his bucket again, intending to go inside.

"What about the fields?" Gwen asked, mimicking his gesture.

After balancing the bucket in one hand against his hip, he said something else, then gestured to Gwen and flung his arm in the direction of the fields. He repeated the gesture two more times.

"I don't understand you," Gwen said, trying to gesture to show that.

Either he understood her or thought she insulted him, because he disappeared into the house with the bucket. He emerged a few moments later with a very big samurai sword. Standing in the doorway, he pointed it at her, then at the fields while saying, very firmly in a way that could be understood despite the language barrier, that she should go.

Pity the whiteboard outside had said to make friends.

It had also said not to get killed. Which left Gwen in a bit of a fix. "What? You're not worried I'll damage your fields as I go?"

It wasn't like he could understand her anyway.

The man was relying on her body language to try to understand her. He used some body language of his own to gesture with the sword again.
