History in Living Colour - Friday, Period 3 (Week 6)

Upon entering the Danger Shop, the students were greeted with a door and a whiteboard. The messy writing, all in capital letters, read

'GO THROUGH THE DOOR ALONE OR IN PAIRS. MAKE FRIENDS. DON'T GET KILLED. WHEN THE PROGRAM FREEZES, YOU CAN LEAVE.

THE DOCTOR'

The Doctor wasn't present, but chances were he was around somewhere.

Before you go in or after.

On the other side, the students would find themselves in a very green, picturesque valley. The valley was surrounded by mountains that would be difficult to climb. Two buildings, a small thatched-roof house and a barn of sorts, were the only structures in sight.

They were the only sign of life in the area. If the students got closer, they would see a Japanese man carrying water a bucket towards the house.

If you manage to find him. Good luck with that unless it's an emergency.

Poor saps.

The idea is you go, try to make friends with the guy who turns out to be a samurai and try not to get killed. He won't speak any English and will be very suspicious of anyone coming onto his turf. It's intended to be a "hey, let's see how they go when they're thrown into a historical period they probably don't know much about!"

The Doctor is lurking around, but will only come out if someone shouts for him if they're in need. Most play will be in the morning and then evening. Plenty going on today, so no need to worry about playing here unless you desperately want to! :)

Gwen Cooper

Gwen watched the man for a moment before trying out a hesitant "Hello?"

He looked at her, but didn't move at first. Then, as if having thought about it very carefully and then made a decision, he ignored her greeting and continued walking. He kept her sight the whole time, even going out of his way to do so.

Inara Serra

That wasn't exactly promising. "You wouldn't happen to know where we are?"

Inara, remembering the lesson about Mary, Queen of Scots, decided to observe for a bit before saying anything, so she walked as quietly as she could to a copse of trees so she could hide behind them.

The man set the bucket down near the door and turned to face her. He looked her up and down, as if sizing her up. His eventual response was short and clipped in tone, even if it was in very old Japanese.

The man continued to carry his bucket towards the house. He was confident in his stride, but kept looking up towards the closest mountains from time to time.

Oh, bugger. "Uh, konichiwa?" Which was about the extend of her Japanese, old or otherwise.

Peyton Sawyer

It was beautiful there. Peyton smiled and nodded at the man.

He raised an eyebrow and stood his ground, then barked at her and signalled for her to go away. He was waving in the direction of the fields between here and the mountains. He said something else and then huffed and picked up his bucket again, intending to go inside.

Peyton was here. And a little down about the Homecoming thing.

When he spotted Peyton, he looked at her suspiciously. The hair was a dead give-away that she wasn't local. He called to her in archaic Japanese, jerking his head to tell her to go away.

She put her hands up and tried to look as small and innocent and lost as possible.

"What about the fields?" Gwen asked, mimicking his gesture.

After balancing the bucket in one hand against his hip, he said something else, then gestured to Gwen and flung his arm in the direction of the fields. He repeated the gesture two more times.

He balanced the bucket against his hip with one arm and used the other to wave her away back to the fields, while telling her to buzz off.
