Cooking Club [Home Ec Classroom, Thursday, 1pm]

The facts were these: Ned...had never run a club before. He was sure that fact was incredibly hard to tell but, yes, he'd never run anything even like a club before.

So, equipped with a cookbook and a pie (might as well bake one for the first club), he found his way to the classroom and gotten it set up as many hours of research had suggested. That was done.

He even wrote COOKING CLUB on the board just in case anyone got confused. You know, like Ned himself.

Once people had found their way into the classroom, Ned nervously stood up and said, "Um, hi. Some of you know me, some of you don't. I'm Ned and this is the cooking club. I did some research..." And he hoped no one laughed at him for that. "...and the first club meeting should generally just be an icebreaker so...let's just do names and favorite food. You can add in cooking experience, if you want to and if you have it. Otherwise, we'll just do something nice and easy to get to know each other."

He cleared his throat. "Anyway, yeah, I'm Ned and my favorite food is pie, obviously. I'm partial to apple pies. I've been cooking since I was about nine, mostly desserts but I'm pretty good with any recipes. So...anyone else?"

"About a half an hour, off an on. The whole thing is about two hours, but most if it is just waiting. My Nanny taught me to make them when I was little."

"Not bad for something that looks almost like art," Ned said, nodding. "These are really impressive. I'm almost afraid to eat one because they're so neat looking."

"You can have another if you eat the one you have," he teased just a little. "And it's just candy melted there."

"Double blast of sugar," he said and finally did take a bite, savoring the taste because, yeah, they were good cookies. Really good. "These are really good."

He looked down at the bag, that held three or four more, and pulled it out. Then he held it out for Ned.

"You're welcome to the rest. After all, the pie smells delicious and I believe that was your work?"

"Really? Hey, thanks," Ned said, surprised but pleased. "And yeah, I made that earlier today. It keeps me busy when I don't have classes or anything else to do."

"Same here. I have a few other studies, but you can't exactly feed people with the others."

"And people always wanna eat," Ned agreed. "Can't say I blame them. Food's good."

"It certainly is, especially here. I can't say there's quite anything like the bounty of this place back home for anyone but the very rich."

"Not back where I'm from either," Ned said. "There's enough things to cook with but I can find just about anything I want for a recipe here."

"I've gone home and gotten some spices and things from Oz if you'd ever like to see them," he offered. "They're a little different than what's available here and they're nice for certain things."

"Yeah, love to," Ned said. "I'm using the regular ole spices here. Not that they're bad but I love seeing different things."

He grinned.

"You realize they're the 'regular old spices' for me, yes? The pepper here is quite a bit different from what we have back in Oz, I'll say. A few other things just have different names, but there are some plants and fruits that don't quite match up that I could show you."

"Oh, right, sorry," he said apologetically. "The whole...the different worlds thing still catches me off guard. But, yeah, definitely, I'd like to see the 'regular old stuff' for you."
