The Library; Monday [ 10/06 ]

Cal came in to open the library with a cup full of possibly more sugar than coffee, and settled in behind the desk for a day of alternating between reading a book on surfing, jotting down ideas for either a story or newspaper articles, and a fourth period geography quiz.

Oh. And maybe actually working a little bit here and there, too. Just enough to make him seem helpful.

"Ohhh, right," Cal nodded. "There I thought you meant the test, and that didn't seem to make nearly as much sense."

"...What is an onsen, anyway?"

"A natural hot spring." A beat. "Like a hot tub."

"Oh."

Beat.

"Cool."

Only maybe not as much. Hot tubs, jacuzzis. They didn't exactly take Cal to a comfortable place, for more reasons than just the usual.

He glanced toward Temari's paper to see how she was coming along.

Well enough. But mostly because she was avoiding Eastern Europe.

"They have those where you're from, right?"

"Hot tubs, yeah," Cal said, "but not so much natural hot springs like hot tubs. There are, you know, geysers and shit in national parks, but you don't go and soak in them."

"Why not? They're some of the most relaxing places."

"Uhhh..." It seemed like a good question, and so Cal thought about a potential reason why for a moment.

"Well," he mused, "they're in national parks, which are set aside for preservation. Can't really preserve the land if you've got people soaking in all the geysers all the time and infecting the pristine, undefiled...nature of nature."

That... made no sense. "Uh-huh."

"I don't know!" Cal said, throwing up his hands a bit, although the whole thing was far too muted to be actual frustration. He gestured toward the bookshelves. "Go read a book on it."

"Brat," She chided. "I think I've finished your test."

"You know," Cal said, an air of assumed innocence to his expression, "I keep hearing that word a lot lately; it's a good thing I like it."

He grinned at Fanbutt, holding out one hand to receive the paper from her as the other grabbed a red pen and clicked the nub out pointedly.

Handing it over, she rolled her eyes. "You're in a better mood this week."

"Yeah," Cal said, as he started looking over the paper, pen ready to mark any mistakes as he checked her answers with his answer key, "because my shins aren't screaming out in pain every time I take a breath."

"You spit on her," Temari replied dryly. "You deserved a kick."

"Does everyone choose to ignore the fact that she kicked me, and then I spit on her? If anyone deserved anything, she deserved the little saliva shower."

"No, kicking her back was what deserved," Temari said.

"I can't help it," Cal said loftily, as he handed Temari back her graded paper, "that I tend to like my punishments to be more creative than just an eye for an eye."

Forget the fact that the spitting thing was completely stolen from his brother.

"That only escalates it," She remarked, looking over the paper.

"I'll agree that I earned the second kick," Cal commented, "but the first one was completely out of line, and anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy."

"Of course," She said with the patience that came from having an idiot of a younger brother. "I'm glad to see you heal quickly."

"There are still some pretty big bruises," Cal said, almost proudly, "but as they've changed in color, they've reduced in pain."

"I hope you're not planning on asking me to kiss them better."

"Oh, I wasn't planning on it, no," Cal said, "but now that you've offered..."

He pushed his chair back, allowing him the space to reach down as if to pull up the legs of his pants.

"Put your scrawny legs away," Temari said, chuckling.

"Watch whose legs you're calling scrawny!" Cal said, overexaggerating the process of laying back down his hems over his shoes and straightening up. "I've started a whole new workout focusing on the legs, so they might start looking as buff as my upper half."

Yes, he said this realizing the irony. But he still had some pretty hard muscle up there for how deceptively fragile he looked.

Fragile didn't mean weak.

"I'll wait to see the results," She said dryly.

"And then," Cal replied, leaning back in his chair, "you can kiss my nice tight ass instead of my bruises, Fanbutt."

Temari just gave him a look for that one. "In your dreams, Sparkles."

Even if Cal had bothered trying, he wouldn't have been able to wipe that self-satisfied smirk off his face. "Good job on the test, by the way."

"Thank you." Temari leaned forward on the desk. "I strive to impress."

"Well, keep striving," Cal met her with a grin. "We're doing Asia next. That one should be a bit easier for you; at least the names won't sound as weird."

"Not hard around here," She muttered. "Asia doesn't sound too difficult..."

"It is pretty big, though," Cal said, with a hint of warning in his voice, although he knew that Fanbutt would probably breeze right through it.

"It is," She admitted. "Better get to work on making me a test, Sparkles."

"And you," Cal said, "go work on sitting in water until you turn into a little Fanbutt prune."
