Detention - 10/4 - Saturday morning

On the door, then names were written.

Abby Irene had been working most of the evening in the Danger Shop and so her hair was a little bit out of sorts as the students walked in. Smiling, she straightened it with her hand before looking over the assembled.

"It seems that you young ladies and gentleman have proven to be unable to conduct yourselves properly in an academic setting. Thankfully, we are not living in my day and age and have been provided this lovely educational tool with which to perhaps correct as opposed to simply punishing such behavior."

"You will be attending a small party from my own world and it will be your duty to act as fits the circumstances."

"Why not?" she asked and stepped forward, closer. "There is nothing ever wrong with a little slice of perfect luck."

"Indubitably," Cal agreed, using quite possibly his new favorite word, inspired by the setting, the costumes, the whole pomp and circumstance of everything around him. "If," he continued, "there is to be dancing later, maybe that slice of perfect luck would extend itself a bit further."

A surprised blush stained her cheeks, and Amber lowered her lashes, peeking over at him through their length. "Were there a gentleman so kind to offer his hand, I might find myself completely enraptured and suggest not one, but two dances at least."

"Two!" Cal's eyebrows shot up and he fought against wanting to laugh. "Methinks the lady doth expect quite a lot out of her luck!"

"Hah!" she laughed, pointing her finger at him no matter how unladylike the gesture was given the explained period and the clothes. "Methinks if the gent were a gent at all, he would do everything in his immediate power to make sure the lady's luck never runs out!"

"If that were the case," Cal said, giving Amber's finger a look and looking truly offended by this little lady's crass behavior, "I think that it's the gent's luck that the gent is counting on, thus making him no gent at all."

Amber totally stared at him for a full minute, slacked jaw as she tried to get that to wrap around her brain so she could understand what he said. When she finally did, she snorted. "And I wonder how lucky he might feel to learn that the lady was no lady at all, bur rather a courtesan..." Amber read about that word in one of her books so just had to say it.

"I believe," Cal proposed, "that he would not feel lucky at all, because the gentleman doesn't have very much money in his wallet, I'm afraid."

Cal wasn't sure if that was one of the ones who flirted with men for money, but, if it wasn't, Amber didn't know either, considering the context she'd used it in.

Of course she didn't, this was Amber here. "A gent or not a gent; really you should make up your mind."

"Or maybe," Cal teased with a lofty, self-important expression, "that's for me to know. And you to find out."

Self-important her ass. Amber looked down her nose at him. "I don't think so," she said all high and mighty. "My... husband might not appreciate it." What? They were in the world of make believe; she could totally have a husband.

"Husband, you say?" Cal asked, clearly intrigued.

"Do I need to repeat myself, sir?" she said, her grin sly.

"I think you do," Cal replied smoothly, "for, as it were, I don't believe I see a ring on your finger, madam."

"Which I could have reason for aplenty," she retorted with a delicate arching of her brow. "Just how well do you think you know me?"

"Not well enough," Cal answered, "but I'd like to know more."

"Ask me anything; I'll tell you."

"If you're married," Cal proposed, "then where, pray tell, is the ring? One would think, for a social event such as this, it would be a mandatory accessory. Unless, of course, that is that your husband isn't here, in which case, he might as well not exist."

"It's being repaired, sir," she answered easily, innocently. "And you shouldn't deny the existence of my husband. He enjoys watching me from afar."

Cal snorted slightly. "Well, now, doesn't that sound like a nice, healthy past time?"

"I am not about to discuss these personal matters with you," she replied loftily.

"I thought you said I could ask you anything," Cal pointed out, sounding slightly wounded by the rebuff.

"Ask me something else," she said, her blue eyes dark.

"What if I'm not interested in anything else?"

Amber snickered. "I don't believe that for a second."
