Survival Skills [Wednesday, Period Four]

As the students entered the Danger Shop, Bond by no means looked cheerful, but definitely somewhat less cranky than he had last week.

"Today, we're looking at a skill that's more likely to save someone else's life rather than your own," he began once everyone had arrived. "While there are several which would fall under that description, the one in particular I'm referring to is first aid. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, of which I hope there aren't any, it refers of No matter what kind of life you lead, of all the subjects I am covering in this class, this is one of the ones you are most likely to use, and thus I strongly recommend that you all take an accredited first aid course at some point in your lives."

Bond continued for a while, talking about a variety of situations first aid might be needed in, and demonstrating several techniques. "Now, I would like you all to take a turn practising CPR on Anne here," he said, gesturing to a dummy. "As well as pairing up and practising treating each other for cuts, burns, sprains, and the like, you'll find plenty of bandages and other equipment at your workstations."

He chuckled beneath his breath.

"As do I, to be honest, but we should probably make an effort."

"Sprain, cut, or burn?" he asked her quickly.

"Burn," she said after a moment. "They're quite common back home, so might as well."

He nodded and pulled out one of the gauze bandages, looking to her with a brief flash of a grin.

"Let's pretend we've already put water on it," he said, "so we don't get you wet for nothing since there's nothing there."

He waited for her to hold out a limb.

She gave him a sly look, then held out her right arm and made it change to an arm with horrible looking burns on it.

That... meddled with him in a few ways, right smartish. He blinked down at the arm and then up at her.

"Were you saving it for a special occasion or something, or is that an illusion?"

'Oh, it's real enough," she said. "I can make my arm into pretty much anything I want. Why not add some realism to this?"

"Will it hurt you?" he asked her first as he brought her over to cool the burn.

"Because if it would hurt you, it's unnecessary."

"No," she said. "I just made it look that way. I could make it actually be burned, but what's the point?"

"Thank you," was all he said to that.

He started wrapping her up with the bandage, making sure to keep it relatively loose close to the skin.

She nodded at his efforts. "Very nice."

He bowed his head quickly to her before finishing up.

"And now me?"

She nodded. "And you wish your injury to be...?"

He considered.

"A scrape or cut. That's what I had often enough."

He wondered, vaguely, if he could call up the memory of the injuries from the past, if his skin remembered. 'Saving it' indeed, not that the idea wasn't terrifying. He promptly pushed the thought away and put up his arm.

"Here you go."

Helen carefully bandaged him up, far more delicately than it might have seemed she would.

He noticed and nodded to her work.

"Very well done. Do you work at the clinic?"

She looked at him curiously. "No, why would you ask."

"My sister works there. I was only wondering."

Helen shook her head. "I'm afraid I only have some small skills."

"I learned to patch myself up," he admitted.

That happens when 'lets see if the rocks will bounce off of him' is a common game.

The moment was rather awkward, and so he ducked his head.

"I think we've done everything for the class," he offered.
