"Good afternoon," Jean-Paul announced. "Housekeeping: your syllabus is on your desk. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask. I will be holding office hours on Wednesdays if you would like to speak to me more privately about anything. Now." He clapped his hands together enthusiastically. "Down to business. Today's topic: Flight. No wings. Flight with wings will be next week, and if any of you have wings I have not noticed yet, please speak to me after class or in my office hours. Or if you know someone with wings who might be willing to provide a practical demonstration, please send them my way. Additionally, lest you think I am quite mad for suggesting one of you might have wings I have not noticed, I know a man with a twenty-foot wingspan who can fold them down to be unseen under a suit jacket. But I digress.

"Last week we discussed gravity. Gravity is critical. It keeps the Earth in orbit, and keeps us all from flying off into space by simple dint of jumping." Jean-Paul, whose feet were on the ground for once, jumped up once and came back down to demonstrate. "To work against gravity, most people must exert force via their muscles. And yet..." he slowly rose until his feet were a good two feet off the ground. "I, and some of you, can act against gravity by doing this. Your assignment for the day is to break up into groups and discuss how this is possible. There are no wrong answers; scientists have been arguing over this for years. However, do please try to use logic and what you know of physics in formulating your hypotheses."

"Well..." Teddy cleared his throat. "They could be a mutant."

"With . . . what?" This was sounding like one of her weird comic-book dreams. "Gravity-defying DNA?"

"It happens," Teddy muttered. "Or they could be an alien. Or maybe be exposed to some cosmic rays."

Yes. These all made perfect sense to Teddy. What a strange world he came from.

Katchoo shut her eyes and rubbed a hand over her face, then sighed. "It's probably better if I just nod and go with it, isn't it?"

"It happens all the time!" Teddy insisted. "Mr. Beaubier is a mutant."

"Okay, okay, geez," Katchoo grumbled. "Don't have to get all defensive about it. I just don't get how it works, that's all."

It would be a good guess that not knowing how it worked was kind of pissing her off.

"Oh. Um. Genetics?" Teddy was a wee bit fuzzy on the details there too. "I know he can run really fast too, maybe that's part of it?"

Katchoo shook her head again, more violently this time to get rid of the mental image of Mr. Beaubier taxing down a runway. "But the aerodynamics crap . . ."

That she'd never bothered to pay attention to.

Teddy shrugged. "My ex-boyfriend can fly with... um... magic."

He was just catching onto how odd this sounded to people not from Universe 616.

Katchoo snorted. "What, like with a broom or something?"

Though actually, this sounded like it made more sense than genes that let you fly.

"No, he had had lightning bolts that..." Teddy paused. "Magic."

"Okay, this is sounding less like an explanation and more like some twisted smutty fantasy," Katchoo mumbled.

"It wasn't!" Teddy said quickly. "He's a mutant. Kinda. It's confusing."

"Confusing? Kinda? You know, you have a real way with understatement," Katchoo told him. "Can I just go with 'people from other worlds are really damn weird' as an explanation?"

"Well... okay. We could," Teddy said, now trying to get some weird image of Billy in a Fabio type pose out of his head.

"There, see? That's settled," Katchoo announced. "Unless you're gonna tell me you can fly."

She kind of wished she could fly. Damn dreams where she did. What a tease.

"Uhh..."
