The Library; Monday [ 09/15 ]

Cal wasn't sure at first how he felt when he came in to open the library, grabbed a book on the battle of Thermopylae, checked it out, and watched as it unimpressively remained a book and did not turn into anything little and cute and soldier-y.

And then he realized that he knew exactly how he felt. Hurt. Dejected. Led on.

With all his fun plans for the day crushed by the discovery that the weirdness had passed, Cal was being productive by making little balls of paper and trying to shoot them through imaginary goals on the other side of the desk with his pencil.

Shooting little pieces of paper lost its novelty, too, and now Cal has out a notebook, staring down at it and making an attempt to write something.

Writing wasn't being successful, so now Cal was thinking about embarking on that new pursuit of artistry and sketch a little.

The notebook stood empty still.

Clearly, Cal needed fuel just like his creativity did, so he went to go get lunch, leaving the library open only to the librarian and other aides, should they need it.

He felt like a dork for doing it, but Cal finally did something actually worthwhile by brainstorming on a few ideas for things he and Amber could do. He figured that it would be his duty as a boyfriend, or something, to try to think of cool things to do.

...Oh, hey. Books that needed to be shelved that had been there all day. Cal...supposed he could do that, too.

Kevin walked into the library. He looked lost. He was lost.

"Where am I?" he asked aloud.

"...Library," Cal answered, after taking a moment to confirm that, yeah, that actually did seem to be an honest, sincere question. "Hi."

Kevin looked around, as though he was attempting to verify the response. "Oh, yeah. I guess it is," he replied with a nod.

He turned towards Cal. "Hey!" He recognized the guy. "So you work here?"

Cal, however, unfortunately, was not so good on the recognition end of things and was left wondering if he should know who this guy was. He looked vaguely familiar, in the way that the majority of well-built and attractive guys he went to school with but never talked to looked familiar.

So his answer was a deadpanned, "No. I just come here and shelve books for the fun of it."

"Whatever floats your boat, dude," Kevin replied with a smile. He leaned back against a shelf and regarded the boy in front of him.

"So, you um still want to try surfing sometime, bro? I just got some sweet new board shorts and a can of wax for my board." Implying that he was looking for a reason to use them.

Cal blinked.

Oh! The surfer guy! Wasn't that...? Yeah, that was all the way at the beginning of the summer and he'd actually almost forgotten about it. A small, faint smile, somewhat proud, appeared in response to the fact that the other guy had actually remembered. Now if only Cal could remember his name so he didn't look like a complete jerk...

"You wax the boards?" he asked, gaining a bit more of a grin and trying to ignore the fact that wax only made him think of upper lip pain. "Weird. But, uh, yeah, I'm up for it. I mean, we didn't miss the season for it or anything, did we?"

"Nah, man. The season is still pretty prime. I mean, with all those hurricanes churning about there's even a chance of grabbing a half-decent wave every now and then. It's not like we're in surf Mega." Yes, he meant Mecca.

He grinned, happy to discuss a subject he knew something about.

Not that Cal would have really caught the gaffe, since he wasn't entirely sure half of that was English. His attention drifted slightly toward the shelves, thinking that there'd have to be at least one book on surfing in there. And he wouldn't even have to worry about it turning into a cat.

"Oh, yeah," he agreed, congenially enough. "Definitely. Were you thinking about any particular time? I'd love to learn to...catch some waves..."

Man, Cal hoped that was the right terminology.

"Right on, dude! We can hit the beach any time you want, really. When are you free?" Kevin wondered if there was a place on the island he could pick up a spare board.

"Uh..." Cal took a moment to consider. "My weekends are pretty free," he offered, wondering if, in the whole grand scheme of having a girlfriend, Amber would actually expect him to do boyfriendly things in that time.

"I work Saturdays, but my Sundays are open," he offered. "This weekend is probably not the best ~~because my mun is outta town~~, though. Toby mentioned something about... well, um, something." He frowned, trying to remember what exactly it was he had going on this weekend.

Cal arched a slight eyebrow at the seeming struggle that the surfer guy (there was a note made to himself to somehow figure out what his name was) had with his memory and offered, "Well, next Sunday, maybe?"

Usually his workout afternoon, now that school started back up, but Cal was sure he could still fit something in.

"That would be great." Kevin straightened up and looked about the library again.

"Well, man, I should probably let you get back to the, um," he pointed at some books, "books."

Cal followed the point to the books, which he didn't imagine were going anywhere (this week, anyway), but he shrugged in vague agreement anyway. "Yeah, I guess..."

"Cool." He started to head out. "I'm in room 302 if you wanna stop by sometime."

"Uh, cool." Cal blinked, thinking that that was all kind of weird, but...well, cool. He lifted a hand a bit belatedly in a wave. "407 for me, if you want to...you know...same thing."
