Introductory Superhuman Physics, Tuesday Fourth Period [9-9]

"Last week was obligatory," Jean-Paul said at the beginning of this week's class. "This week is mundane. Do not worry, we will get to the fun stuff shortly. This is basic physics, a very abbreviated rundown. If you are interested in the complexities, you are in the wrong class.

"I know I talk very quickly and this will make taking notes annoying, so most of this is in the handouts at your desks." Jean-Paul began to pace in front of his desk, his feet a few inches off the floor the entire time.

"First, there is gravity. Gravity exists, and it affects everything. This is a fact. All objects with mass attract each other; objects with larger mass attract each other more than objects with smaller mass. Hence the Earth revolves around the sun; hence our feet stick to the earth. What goes up, must come down. For the purposes of this conversation, disregard my feet. Then there are the laws of conservation of mass and energy which state that energy and mass can neither be created or destroyed. Another law of thermodynamics--the second, I believe--grossly simplified, states that a system will move toward chaos, not order, and this cannot be reversed. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force, and objects at rest stay at rest unless acted on by an outside force. Frequently this force is friction, more on it at another time. Einstein's relativity: energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. And nothing can move faster than the speed of light. These are the laws by which the universe is governed, children. Without them, everything falls apart."

Jean-Paul stopped pacing, turned to face the class, and grinned. "And we are going to spend the next few months exploring the many, many ways they get broken. Are there any questions?"

Deciding he was completely brilliant for taking two physics classes this semester, John sat back in his chair, his eyes glazing over while he feigned paying attention.

Johnny was paying attention, glancing over the handouts every now and again.

Ben sat in class and took notes.

If by "took notes" your interpretation included "and folded them into paper X-Wings."

Katchoo was wondering what had possessed her to sign up for this class, yes. She was actually paying some attention -- she'd lived in Houston long enough to feel like she had to do something to set herself apart from the anti-science crowd because if there was anything she really hated it was willful ignorance -- and she had to admit, there was definite appeal in a class that was going to study all the way these laws got broken.

Gavin didn't nap but he did sort of find his mind wandering a few times.

John certainly wasn't avoiding looking at Gavin or turning red. That was for wusses.

"Glad to see you can keep your hands off me," Gavin said, unable to help himself.

Really.

John glared. "Ha ha. Consider yourself fully resistible."

"Well, you know, I couldn't tell what with the insane way you were acting a few days ago," Gavin said.

"Gremlin bite," John reminded him. "See if I ever agree to drink tea with Karal again."

"Aww, how sweet," he said. "You two still owe me a new brush."

"Har har," Gavin said. "And a new pillow."

"Do you want the next words out of my mouth to be how you were prepared to declare your love for me?" Gavin asked.

John's eyes widened. "Sorry! No. Not really, no."

"Thank you," Gavin said. "It might have been bad for you but come on, I was outnumbered there."

John shuddered. "We should all invest in tasers."

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"To taser the gremlins with?" Gavin asked. "Think that'd work?"

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] missed-the-gate.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, to taser each other with once we're bitten, thus negating any potentially horrible situations." This was good logic.

Re: During the Lecture

[identity profile] sixstandingby.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Don't you think that might like...hurt?" Gavin asked.

"Worse than the aftermath of a gremlin bite?"

Francine wasn't the best student ever, but she had chosen this class because she was interested, so she was doing her best to pay attention to more than just how cute the teacher was. So far she thought she was doing a decent job. Writing everything down helped. Even if there were a lot of little hearts and variations on Mrs. Francine _______ interspersed with the actual notes.

Ah, yes. Physics for Citizens.

Warren idly tapped his pencil against his desk while he listened. Really, he was looking more forward to the breaking of said laws of physics.

It would be more like a class from his old school, that way.

Momoko read as Mr Beaubier lectured. Spending so much of her free time at the lab over the years, she had heard quite a bit about the laws of physics, but hearing and caring understanding are two different things.

"If 'mass cannot be created or destroyed', just where does the cute dress come from?" she muttered under her breath as she highlighted that portion of the handout.

Wes pays close attention, even though this is all pretty basic stuff his father made sure he'd known long ago. Sure, the family legacy might be more biochemistry than physics, but Mr. Collins was well aware of the benefits of a well-rounded education.
