Library; Monday [ 09/08 ]

Blissfully oblivious of any misinformation that the weekends radio reports may have given, Cal came into the library, in a good mood although it was still early and he hadn't gotten through a lot of his coffee. He'd gotten back in the rhythm of his workout, he hadn't even smoked in probably about a week, and he might even...

...well, that last part he wouldn't think about. He didn't want to spoil the good wave he was riding on at the moment with thoughts that would eventually turn to self-doubt. After finding a book that looked pretty good about the legendary Greek battles, he sat behind the desk, stuck his tongue out at the computer, and then kicked up his feet on the desk to enjoy his read.

The book was getting pretty good, really, and Cal was realizing that, while he was good, he wasn't a good enough reader to make it through the thing all in one day, even if no one else came through the library. So he went ahead, grabbed a card, and went to check it out.

He'd just finished writing the s at the end of his name when he heard a meow, blinked, and glanced up.

At the kitten sitting where the book was, wearing some sort of Grecian style armour and helm, a little spear under one paw, a tiny shield strapped to the other forelimb. It meowed at Cal again, lifting its paw from the spear to bat lightly at him.

Cal...could only stare, really. And lament the loss of a really good book.

Dor wandered up to the desk with all seven books from the Barry Plodder series in his arms. "Can I check these out?" He asked.

Cal quirked an eyebrow at the stack, especially how the books seemed to get progressively thicker. It was a pretty successful way of dragging his attention off of Achilles, though, that was for sure.

"Yeah, no problem." He sat up to better get the guy a slip of paper to check them out or whatever. "You, uh...plan on being really, really bored coming up here or something?"

"Oh, someone I met the other day seemed to think highly of the series," Dor replied. "So I thought I'd see what the fuss was about."

After giving the books another look, Cal looked to the other boy and admitted, eyebrows frowning, "I've never even heard of it."

It was a good thirty years after his time; he was allowed!

"Neither had I," Dor replied with a shrug. "But the girl seemed to think they were good and so I thought I check them out. I'm Dor by the way."

"Cal," he responded, with a slight smile in appreciation of good monosyllabic names. "Nice to meet you."

Achilles (for this is what Cal decided to call the soldier kitten, after noticing that he was almost entirely grey if it weren't for the small black spot on its back heel) was still batting at Cal, but Cal didn't mind so much. The thing was so tiny that he didn't notice. It was more cute than, anyway, really, especially when Achilles gave this little tiny kitten sneeze and his helmet went forward over his face. Adorable.

Wendy came into the library at the start of the period and headed into the stacks.

After searching the shelves for a while, she came up to the counter with an armful of art folios. "Cute kitty."

After Cal adjusted Achilles' helmet again, the kitten bounced around the desk in an excited, too-much-energy to contain sort of way, and Cal shrugged. "Thanks?" he said, not really sure if that was the right response because it wasn't like it was his kitten or anything. "He just kinda showed up..."

He nodded to the art folios. "Checking those out?"

"Like those circle things last week?" Wendy asked, watching the kitten. "Only less insanely murderous."

She nodded and held the folios out to him. "Yeah, figured I should take advantage of the whole multi-dimensional thing, and see what I've been missing."

After eying the cat a little more himself, Cal decided, "Unless you could be killed by cuteness." He took the folios from the girl, giving them a look over. "Okay, so, a few art books for one Miss...?"

"Watson," Wendy replied. "Wendy Watson. And I don't know, somehow things always look less cute the second they try to kill you.

Cal eyed Wendy for a moment before waving an accusing pen in Achilles' direction. "He did try to poke me with that spear he's got, though. That thing's actually sharp, too, it's just he doesn't have an opposable thumbs so he couldn't really hold it well. So he tried, but he still managed to be cute. Probably because he failed so hard at it."

"Anyway, Wendy Watson, I think you just have to sign here to check them out." He slid a little slip of paper her way.

"Failed murderousness has it's own cuteness, yes," Wendy agreed, signing the slip of paper. "Thanks, Mr...?"

"Stephanides," he supplied. "Cal Stephanides. It kind of lacks the alliterative grace of your name."

"But at the same time, no one's going to give you a nickname based on that alliteration," Wendy replied, just as the folios turned into a veritable litter of brightly coloured, painted-blotched, kittens. "Okay, wasn't expecting that."

"What sort of--" But Cal's question was cut off by the appearance of more kittens and he took a moment to scratch behind his ear. "Okay, so it wasn't just me," he said, and nodded toward Achilles. "He started out a a book on Greco-Roman warfare."

"And now I'm glad I didn't choose any cubists," Wendy replied, reaching out to scratch the nearest kitten behind the ears. "Or a Van Gogh for that matter."

Cal couldn't help laughing. "Picasso!" he said. "Poor thing would have an eye drooping off the side of his face!"

If it weren't for the fact that he had no idea how the kittens might go back to books, he might have considered going and checking out a Picasso book once Wendy left just to see that.

Wendy snorted, picking up kitten so covered in paint you couldn't tell what its original colour was. "I'm pretty sure this guy was the Pollock."

"If he wasn't a book just a few seconds ago," Cal said, chuckling still, "I'd almost feel sorry for the guy. He is cute, though. I like I like Pollock on cats better than Pollock on canvas, to be honest."

"He is something of an acquired taste," Wendy admitted, trying to figure out which kitten was which folio. "Definitely puts the abstract in abstract expressionist."

"The next great thing in modern art," Cal agreed, picturing it in his head. "The animal rights activist hippies'll have a field day!"

Oh, yeah, Lacey was never, ever, finding out about this. "Animals aren't art," Wendy said, grinning. "Use brushes, not kittens!"

"It'll be like the whole thing with violins all over again, only cat fur instead of cat gut."

"Tell me about it," Wendy said. "Although maybe if you used fooddye or something, they might listen to you."

Cal shook his head. "I'm totally remembering this in case I find myself in a desperate situation and need something, anything, to garner some attention."

"Pretty sure something like this'll get you more than enough."

Noticing that Achilles' was yawning and getting droopy-eyed, Cal decided that he needed to entertain the thing. It was, presumably, used to battles and everything, so Cal told him to hold on one minute, so that he could go get a copy of the Iliad to read to him and get him all excited again.

Cal was glad he'd brought a lunch with him today instead of going down to the cafeteria, because he would have felt bad about leaving Achilles alone.

Besides, they also had a totally awesome spear-against-fork battle on the desk.

Okay, Achilles was kind of getting annoying. Going out on a whim, Cal went to check out the Iliad in his name to see what would happen.

Sure enough, another kitten, similarly dressed, but clearly an enemy of Achilles'. Good; they could entertain themselves in epic battle.

And by the time the end of his day rolled around, Cal was left wondering if he should just leave with the kittens like that, to see what happened or for whoever worked tomorrow to deal with.

Gone for a good chunk of time for work tomorrow, but SP is totes love!

YOU PEOPLE ARE MAKING ME USE THE WORD TOTES IN EVERYDAY LIFE!

I do not appreciate it.
