Ethics [Tuesday, September 2, 2nd period]

Anakin walked into his classroom precisely on time and gave the students assembled there an appraising glance.

Except for how his glance lingered on a couple of faces (and a unicorn, and a...droid) as his eyes widened slightly, it wasn't possible to tell what he thought of them.

"I'm Master Skywalker," he said in a voice that was intended to carry, "this is Ethics, and we're going to skip the introductions--I'll figure out who you are--and move straight to our first discussion."

He paced around the room, cloak flaring out behind him, as he handed out the syllabus. "Today's topic," he said. "Self sacrifice: knowing the difference between saving people and being a pretentious twit."

"Any time I ask a a group of people what they would do to save someone they love, they all blither on about how they would set the world on fire, lie, cheat, steal, kill, die, et cetera, et cetera. I've been at this school too long to believe that half of you haven't already been put into this situation and I'm in no mood to hear adolescent ramblings about how wonderful you were or might hypothetically be. We're going to ground it in reality.

"Last summer there was a woman who was in charge of this school. She had been placed in power legitimately, was allowed to punish in accordance with that power, and began pushing the boundaries of her authority almost immediately. She called students to her office, punished them for slights genuine or imagined, and began escalating the severity and frequency of her punishments, going over the line into what was no longer acceptable."

Anakin crossed his arms over his chest, the scars across his face very evident in the light coming through the window. "It eventually took a team of highly qualified adults to take her out. Today's topic: when do you draw the line? When do you admit to yourself that a problem cannot be solved, that to sacrifice yourself isn't a statement, it's merely pointless? How long does it take for you to check your ego?"

Lee scribbled down a few notes and then spent the rest of time just thinking. Not daydreaming, just thinking about the lecture in relation to a few things.

Oh, good. Grumpy bus guy was her teacher. This was going to suck.

Molly sighed and took notes, as well as an occasional look around to see who else was in the class.

Agnes spent the lecture watching Master Skywalker intently. She'd never seen someone so witchy who was so... male.

Liz listened carefully to the lecture and took down a few notes.

Peyton took lots of notes, glancing around the room and occasionally doodling on her paper.

Meg took some notes and occasionally raised an eyebrow. Could he be anymore intense?

Ella listened closely. She thought she would go as far as she could, but she could see Master Skywalker's point about the potential for stupidity.

Penelope took lots of notes, thinking it would please her teacher to see her do so. He was rather frightening.

This dude was intense. Harvey tried not to make eye contact with him during the lecture.

Michael listened, though he wasn't sure he'd never consider self-sacrifice useless.

Jess wasn't actually headdesking, but the thought was very tempting.

Firekeeper listened, but didn't take notes, since, well. She couldn't. She did have to wonder why humans would select a One like this woman who clearly wasn't fit to lead.

Okay, so Tahiri spent a good ten minutes gawking at the teacher.

Because it was only the man who'd been Darth Vader, except he wasn't apparently, and she'd lost count of how many times the Jedi Masters had brought him up in lessons back at the Praxeum. Plus on Saturday she'd been too busy trying not to look out of the windows on the shuttle ride over to do much gawking.

Every time this place started to make a little more sense, it turned right around and got a whole lot more confusing.

Dōjima spent the lecture doodling in her notebook. Great. Ethics. She had a pretty good idea of what to expect since Romeo had taken the class last spring, and she wasn't exactly looking forward to it.

Toby's eyes shone as Anakin spoke, focusing more on what the professor was wearing than on what he was saying. The professor's hair was just gorgeous.

Despite having saved his clothing from the hairballs the previous night, Toby was as shirtless as ever and looking mighty fine.

Donos swallowed hard as he listened to the lecture. This class was going to hit some tough points.

Jan wasn't taking notes, for obvious reasons, but he was listening closely.

And half-glaring at Anakin, ears canted back, because he remembered what Molly had told him on Saturday.

Bumblebee took recordings, because he had no pens. He looked very attentive though.

Molly raised a hand. "Isn't there kind of a step in the middle there? Where you ask for help to see if someone else has a better idea?"

This particular subject reminded Ender entirely too much of his last (last, last, the last) game, and all the people he had sent off to die. He was quiet, sullen, and thoughtful. And present.

After class, Jan went to talk to Anakin, and he didn't look overly happy. His ears were partly back, his neck was arched and he was holding his tail high. "Your pardon, but there is something I must speak with you about."
