Introductory Superhuman Physics, Tuesday Fourth Period [9-2]

At first, there was no teacher at the front of the classroom, and the blackboard was blank. Then, there was a swift breeze, and suddenly a lean man with pointy features stood at the front of the room. The blackboard now read:

Introductory Superhuman Physics
Mr. Beaubier

"Good afternoon, everyone," Jean-Paul said. "This is Introductory Superhuman Physics; if you are one of our new and naive students allow me to take this opportunity to teach lesson one: yes, superpowers exist. A lot of your fellow students and teachers have them. I direct your attention to my feet." Which were hovering several inches off the floor. "In this class we will be covering how these superpowers work. The class is titled 'physics' but will by necessity delve into some biological matters as well, and as a disclaimer, I will tend to default to how these things work in my home universe. If you happen to know your universe works differently on a particular topic, I would be very pleased if you would share with the class. Your syllabus is not ready this week due to Dragon*Con; I will have it for you by next week.

"Now, for this week, we will do the usual round of introductions. This will also help me tailor your syllabus. I would like to know your name, where you are from, why you are taking this class, and about any superpowers you might have. Simple, non?"

Momoko listened to the lecture, slightly conflicted. She was supposed to keep her identity secret, but she'd made that oath over two years ago. Now a TEACHER was asking about it. But if everyone else knew about superpowers and even had them, then it really didn't matter if she did too, right? And it would be cool to be able to hang out with other people who had superpowers! May even form a team here at Fandom just like her team back home? Oh. Would they kick her out of the team back home if she had one here? Maybe stop sending her money for cakes?

"Hmmm. What to do, what to do?"

Katchoo . . . had not been expecting quite this subject material when she signed up for this class.

Seriously, superhumans? She supposed after a couple of months in Fandom she shouldn't be surprised they existed, but it still kind of blew her mind that you could actually teach a class on this stuff.

Francine had been expecting this subject matter when she signed up. She was also well aware that most of the science would fly completely over her head, but... flying. She had loved flying, when she was a pony. So she wanted to know more about the whole superdooper deal.

"Uh, Gavin Darklighter," he said, nodding, "and I'm from Tatooine. It's not in this galaxy. It's probably nowhere near this galaxy. I'm pretty sure I'm not a superhero but I'm pretty kriffing good in an X-Wing, can handle guns and...can take gut shots and live."

Ben was just going to stare at Gavin for a while. He was so young.

"I'm Ben Skywalker," he said with a slight smile, "and I'm from the same galaxy as Ad--Gavin. Different planet, though." Which would explain the British Coruscanti accent. "I'm a Jedi, so faster reflexes, telekinesis and a modified telepathy are part of who I am." He cast an admiring glance at the teacher's floating. "I can't fly like that, though."

"Peter Petrelli," Peter said. "I'm from New York, and my power is copying other people's powers. So far I have healing, invisibility, flight, fire, water manipulation, TK, duplicating, astral projection, drawing the future..." Peter trailed off as something occured to him. "And, uh, possibly whatever you have, now."

Momoko looked at her fellow students and settled on a compromise.

"My name is Momoko Akatsutsumi. I'm from Tokyo City in Japan, and in my world I have a secret identity as a superheroine of justice. When I transform into Bl... uh, her, I am stronger then normal, have a really cute dress, and can fly. I also have a yo-yo that I use as a weapon and I can fly a mecha. Oh, that's a giant robot, in my world. Only it's not alive, like Bumblebee, who's actually an alien since he's from another planet. A mecha's just a machine, or sometimes three machines if we separate, but still not alive."

There. She'd told her powers and kept her identity secret! She smiled happily.

Teddy did not squeak like an annoying fanboy because he might have read Mr Beaubier's book, like, five times. No. That would just be silly.

"Um, I'm Teddy Altman," He said, smiling once. "I'm from New York. I'm really strong and can change shape."

"My name is Johnny Storm. I'm from New York, and I'm a superhero. My primary ability is the power to engulf myself in flame. I'm able to fly in excess of the speed of sound and can create great streams of fire, or project firey balls, if you will. I can manipulate and control it within my immediate line of vision, as well as absorb any fire into myself." He paused, thought a moment. "I can hold a person, protect them, while in flame form without them feeling the slightest bit of heat." He had mastered that control and had actually been practicing a great deal lately.

"Katina Choovanski," said the short rough-voiced girl who was only a superhero in bizarre dream sequences that invariably ended with her waking up and smashing an alarm clock. "I'm from Houston, Texas, mostly, and I don't have a frikkin' thing resembling superpowers. That crap doesn't exist in my world."

Francine had been busy looking wide-eyed at all the students with super-powers; she wasn't expecting so many who actually had them, or to be one of the few who didn't.

"Oh, um. I'm Francine," she said, once Katchoo had taken her turn. "I'm from Houston too, same place as Katc... Katina, so I don't have any powers either. But that one weekend we all turned into ponies, I turned into one with wings, and could fly. That was amazing."

Ugh. Warren hated the introductions part of the class. And couldn't help but wonder, if they were sharing superpowers, if the room was going to be segregated according to heroes and sidekicks.

Fixing that issue in one school was enough for him.

"Warren Peace, and yes, it's a pun." He eyed everyone in the room, challenging anyone who dared make an issue of it. "I'm from a place called Maxville, I'm in the class because it seems like it could be useful, considering I can do this."

He lit both of his arms on fire by way of demonstration.
