OPEN MIC STUDENT COUNCIL QUORUM

((OOC: let the games begin. GO! (edit: Bingo Cards are done! Yay! Now go play.)) (second edit: This will be open for discussion until 10pm US CST, Friday, 10/7. If you want to chime in, do it before then. After that time, comments will be locked.)

"Hello and welcome to the Open Mic Student Council Quorum. This is going to be a cross between a Crossfire event, a debate, and a party. We want you to get to know your Student Council candidates - all of them - better. A lot better. To that purpose, we've invited all of them here tonight. However, as this was not a mandatory event, we don't have a roster yet of who will show up. Feel free to write your questions in, we'll make sure they all get them whether they show tonight or not.

Here's how tonight is going to work:

1) Each Student Council Candidate will be asked 5 questions from the quorum directors (that's us), and they will have 1 minute to answer the question to the best of their ability. We'll be keeping score and awarding points for how accurately each question is answered, as well as style and delivery. At the end of the night, the representative with the most points will win a prize.

2) When the 5 questions have been answered, the floor will be opened to the audience for the Crossfire section - to ask the Candidates anything they want. HOWEVER, the questions must be on topic. Questions phrased with vulgar or offensive language, or questions about personal lifestyle choices or habits will be striken - and the asker will be asked to leave. So phrase your questions carefully. We're here to learn things and have fun.

3) The Candidates may ask each other questions in the Crossfire section. Feel free to go head to head over your issues. Well, verbally, anyway.

4) I mentioned fun, and to that effect, we have Buzzword Bingo going. Each of you was handed a set of Buzzword Bingo Cards and a pencil as you entered. Here's how it works: Each card has the name of a Candidate on it, and many, many buzzwords pulled directly from the debate last night. When you note any Candidate using a buzzword in any of their answers, tick it off on their Bingo Card. The first player to declare a Bingo wins a doorprize. The first player to get Bingos on more than five cards gets the grand prize.

The Prizes:

Single Card Bingo: First 12 people will each win 1lb boxes of chocolates from Wonka's Sweet Shop
Two Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $15 gift certificate to Deb's Diner and Retro Store
Three Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $30 gift certificate to Deb's Diner and Retro Store
Four Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $50 gift certificate to The Emporium
Grand Prize: a $100 gift certificate to Red's Tattoos

((OOC NOTE: For the sake of our sanity, here's how it's going to run.

The "(Candidate name) Questions" threads will be locked to only the Candidates - please, no ooc comments or non-Candidate posting in them.

The "(Candidate name) Crossfire" section will be open to any IC comments. Please direct your questions to the Candidates in their threads.

Please keep all OOC comments in the "OOC" thread" - we ask because we'll be cutting and pasting from the other threads as the night goes on.

This post will remain the same - a secondary post will be linked for people who want to catch up without scanning a billion comments.

If you have questions for the moderator - and for right now, that's me - there will be a seperate post in my non-comm journal and you can ask them there. I am turning email notification for this thread off.))

Ms. Halliwell. How will your new duties affect your previous commitments and your current social life?

Phoebe looks at Professor Jerusalem and smiles.

"Sir, as you have noticed by now, I am a wiz at multi-asking. My responsibilities always come before any social life. It's just he right thing to do. However, I wouldn't want anything to affect my performance either in my previous commitments or the Presidency if I ama elected. If such a thing happens, it would be my duty to find someone who could replace me as president and serve the school as needed."

Ms. Halliwell, as a concerned student, I was wondering what you have against school-sanctioned clubs and your fellow students, as displayed by the angry and attacking nature of your campaign materials?

Phoebe shakes her head and smiles. She had expected this question at some point.

"Ms. LeHane? I have nothing against the sanctioned clubs, nor my fellow students. However, I was concerned with the students who were upset over the fact that the only people they saw running were either members of the Junior Achievers Club or people closely tied with Ms. Parker. There has been such an angry display of attacking between the two camps, that I could not in good conscience stay on a ticket like that. For that reason, and that reason alone, I removed myself from the Hottest Ticket In Town and chose to run alone on my own beliefs and platform. I'm sorry if you see my campaign materials as an attack. They are not meant to be used as such. My campaign manager and I were just trying to let people know that not everyone was worried about being accepted by one of the two largest groups on campus."

"That's a very good question, Mr. Six. Even as the Student Council is an administration-sanctioned group, any of us that are elected would have to be willing to place themselves at odds with the administration if the situation calls for it. I don't always follow every order I am given in my life. I have to weigh it against my gut instinct and my beliefs/morals. The Student Council may not always be on the same page as the administration. It's foolhardy to think we will be. However, as I will be expected to uphold the appearance of this school if I am elected, I will do my best to find a happy medium between administration and the students."

Beka smiles and holds up a pinky. "Ms. Halliwell, I'd like to know precisely why you left the Parker campaign, and what "Fuck the Tickets" means to you?"

Re: CROSSFIRE - PHOEBE HALLIWELL (PRESIDENT)

[personal profile] sensethevisions 2005-10-07 10:55 am (UTC)(link)
Phoebe laughs and holds up her own pinky.

"Ms. Valentine, I left the Parker campaign because I didn't approve of some of the campaigning practices being done by that campaign. Don't get me wrong, I loved all of my running mates dearly, but things were happening that I just couldn't accept. The final straws were when one person I cared for had their personal life away from the campaign attacked and used to judge them as a person and when the smear video was used to discredit and attack a fellow student's campaign for office. Our personal lives are just that, personal. So what if one of the candidates for office isn't human. Not all of the people at Fandom High are human and I think that is one of things that makes this school such a great place to be. There is such diversity among the students and the faculty."

Phoebe pauses to take a drink. "As for 'Fuck the Tickets', I mean precisely what it says. During this election, I have heard many students complain about candidates seeming to be on a certain ticket and all of their campaigning being ticket-centric. That's not why I decided to run. I decided to run because even though I have friends on each ticket, I'm still me. This whole election, all anyone has been able to do so far is talk about the tickets and if they have to vote for everyone on one ticket in order to cast a vote for their candidate of choice. There is more to each candidate than just the fact that they're on a certain ticket."

"Phoebe, one of the things I admire most about you -- since we're being real here -- is your dedication to what you believe is right. Leaving Parker's ticket has cost you in personal ways but you haven't flinched from your choice. I know you didn't do it for me or Cole, but what you did? I won't forget."

"Ms. Halliwell, please understand that I am not asking about your love life. What is the one thing, that you as a person, not as a politician, most want? What steps are you taking to achieve that?"

Re: CROSSFIRE - PHOEBE HALLIWELL (PRESIDENT)

[personal profile] sensethevisions 2005-10-07 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Phoebe nods thoughtfully.

"I want to be recognized for my deeds and actions, not just my looks. When I hear people refer to me, they always seem to focus on what I look like at the time. I want to be known for more than the outside wrapping paper, you know? I have goals and plans, but I bet you no one but my sister, Piper, could tell you what they are. So, I throw myself fully into whatever task I am given. I study hard and go out of my way to talk to people or volunteer for Independent Study courses with teachers that have the classes I want to excel in. I don't want to be seen merely as a cute girl or a politician, but as an individual who does have plans and isn't afraid to take the required steps to achieve that. I study, I have a job, I'm good at communicating with most people. But no one really seems to see those aspects about me. It only makes me try harder."

"Followup question to that," Angelus said. "I'm confused. If you wanted to be recognized for your deeds, why did you initially run on a campaign called 'The Hottest Ticket'? And, after leaving the ticket, why did you advertise using posters that tell me more about your cup size than they do about what you can actually do for Fandom High?"

Re: CROSSFIRE - PHOEBE HALLIWELL (PRESIDENT)

[personal profile] sensethevisions 2005-10-07 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Phoebe sighs and shakes her head.

"To be honest, the main reason I was running on that ticket was because they needed someone to run for President and I was under the impression that in order to take part in the debates last night, I needed to be on a ticket of some sort.

"I left that ticket after the smear campaign against Belthazor---as well you know. As for the posters showing my cup size, I didn't realize people would immediately be drawn to my chest and not what I was saying.

"I have never helped to run such an interesting campaign before, so I'm having trouble getting my entire message across. There isn't room on the posters to outline everything I stand for and everything I wish to do for Fandom High.

"I did think that that's what the debates and tonight's function was for."

"I don't think anyone can honestly say you're not dedicated and hardworking." Beka laughs. "It's the first thing I noticed about you. It wasn't until I saw you smiling at Bel someone that I noticed you were lovely. It takes a hell of a lot more than looks to make someone a fitting assistant to Professor Jerusalem."

Phoebe, I think I understand why you chose to leave your current campaign party. However for those of use who do have a "ticket" don't you think that the "Fuck the Tickets" slogan is a bit of an insult to some of the parties who have worked hard to put together a group of candidates and platform that we honestly feel represents the student body? Doesn't it also taint the reason why you left your original ticket to begin with?

[personal profile] sensethevisions 2005-10-07 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ever make a really bad decision when drunk? Or when you were so upset and frustrated by the things around you? I made a bad decision when I decided to make that a slogan. I was emotional over some of the tactics and that's what came out. However, that has since changed. I realized it could be insulting to those that have put a great deal of work into their campaign without resorting to sliming their opponents. I apologize for what was a very bad idea. I wasn't meaning to offend or insult other candidates. You're right, that was the main reason I left my original ticket and decided to try to run my campaign a different way.
