OPEN MIC STUDENT COUNCIL QUORUM

((OOC: let the games begin. GO! (edit: Bingo Cards are done! Yay! Now go play.)) (second edit: This will be open for discussion until 10pm US CST, Friday, 10/7. If you want to chime in, do it before then. After that time, comments will be locked.)

"Hello and welcome to the Open Mic Student Council Quorum. This is going to be a cross between a Crossfire event, a debate, and a party. We want you to get to know your Student Council candidates - all of them - better. A lot better. To that purpose, we've invited all of them here tonight. However, as this was not a mandatory event, we don't have a roster yet of who will show up. Feel free to write your questions in, we'll make sure they all get them whether they show tonight or not.

Here's how tonight is going to work:

1) Each Student Council Candidate will be asked 5 questions from the quorum directors (that's us), and they will have 1 minute to answer the question to the best of their ability. We'll be keeping score and awarding points for how accurately each question is answered, as well as style and delivery. At the end of the night, the representative with the most points will win a prize.

2) When the 5 questions have been answered, the floor will be opened to the audience for the Crossfire section - to ask the Candidates anything they want. HOWEVER, the questions must be on topic. Questions phrased with vulgar or offensive language, or questions about personal lifestyle choices or habits will be striken - and the asker will be asked to leave. So phrase your questions carefully. We're here to learn things and have fun.

3) The Candidates may ask each other questions in the Crossfire section. Feel free to go head to head over your issues. Well, verbally, anyway.

4) I mentioned fun, and to that effect, we have Buzzword Bingo going. Each of you was handed a set of Buzzword Bingo Cards and a pencil as you entered. Here's how it works: Each card has the name of a Candidate on it, and many, many buzzwords pulled directly from the debate last night. When you note any Candidate using a buzzword in any of their answers, tick it off on their Bingo Card. The first player to declare a Bingo wins a doorprize. The first player to get Bingos on more than five cards gets the grand prize.

The Prizes:

Single Card Bingo: First 12 people will each win 1lb boxes of chocolates from Wonka's Sweet Shop
Two Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $15 gift certificate to Deb's Diner and Retro Store
Three Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $30 gift certificate to Deb's Diner and Retro Store
Four Card Bingo: First person to get one wins a $50 gift certificate to The Emporium
Grand Prize: a $100 gift certificate to Red's Tattoos

((OOC NOTE: For the sake of our sanity, here's how it's going to run.

The "(Candidate name) Questions" threads will be locked to only the Candidates - please, no ooc comments or non-Candidate posting in them.

The "(Candidate name) Crossfire" section will be open to any IC comments. Please direct your questions to the Candidates in their threads.

Please keep all OOC comments in the "OOC" thread" - we ask because we'll be cutting and pasting from the other threads as the night goes on.

This post will remain the same - a secondary post will be linked for people who want to catch up without scanning a billion comments.

If you have questions for the moderator - and for right now, that's me - there will be a seperate post in my non-comm journal and you can ask them there. I am turning email notification for this thread off.))

Phoebe nods thoughtfully.

"I want to be recognized for my deeds and actions, not just my looks. When I hear people refer to me, they always seem to focus on what I look like at the time. I want to be known for more than the outside wrapping paper, you know? I have goals and plans, but I bet you no one but my sister, Piper, could tell you what they are. So, I throw myself fully into whatever task I am given. I study hard and go out of my way to talk to people or volunteer for Independent Study courses with teachers that have the classes I want to excel in. I don't want to be seen merely as a cute girl or a politician, but as an individual who does have plans and isn't afraid to take the required steps to achieve that. I study, I have a job, I'm good at communicating with most people. But no one really seems to see those aspects about me. It only makes me try harder."

"Followup question to that," Angelus said. "I'm confused. If you wanted to be recognized for your deeds, why did you initially run on a campaign called 'The Hottest Ticket'? And, after leaving the ticket, why did you advertise using posters that tell me more about your cup size than they do about what you can actually do for Fandom High?"

Phoebe sighs and shakes her head.

"To be honest, the main reason I was running on that ticket was because they needed someone to run for President and I was under the impression that in order to take part in the debates last night, I needed to be on a ticket of some sort.

"I left that ticket after the smear campaign against Belthazor---as well you know. As for the posters showing my cup size, I didn't realize people would immediately be drawn to my chest and not what I was saying.

"I have never helped to run such an interesting campaign before, so I'm having trouble getting my entire message across. There isn't room on the posters to outline everything I stand for and everything I wish to do for Fandom High.

"I did think that that's what the debates and tonight's function was for."

"Since we are getting to know you better," Angelus said, "why did you wait until now to reveal that you're a witch?"

Phoebe's confidence is shaken by the question and she turns pale. She hadn't expected Angelus to come after her with that question. After all, she had only been a witch for a short time and was still trying to get used to the fact that she had powers. She looks around the area to see if Maia or her sisters are around. She sees Piper and can only imagine what Piper must be thinking after hearing this question. She sees Maia moving towards the front and by the stormy look in her eyes, Phoebe knows Maia has heard the question. Her friend nods her head encouragingly and Phoebe feels a bit calmer. She knows what to say now. She takes a deep breath and then narrows her eyes at Angelus. So much for thinking that she and he had an understanding.

"Not that I feel that it has any bearing on this election, but I only found out I was a witch two weeks ago and I have been trying to get used to the idea that I'm different than I thought I was. I didn't feel like I could go running through the halls screaming, 'I'm a witch!'

"A person's abilities or the lack thereof have not been an issue before and these elections have made it that way. If you're trying to imply that I am using it to my advantage to get votes, then you are mistaken, sir. I feel an empathy with students like yourself who have been alientated for being unique. Belthazor was singled out in a smear campaign simply because he was not totally human. I have every right to reveal or conceal any ability that I have, but when someone is outed, so to speak, in an effort to ruin their reputation I feel the need to speak out and say that I am one of the non-humans who were targeted in these anti-magical campaigns."

She smiles at Angelus, and it is not a nice smile. It's obvious he's pricking at her temper. She looks down for a moment and looks back up with a pleasant smile.

"Not quite human doesn't mean evil."

Angelus smiled at her. "I couldn't agree more."

Belthazor glanced over at Phoebe. Was that a message for him? He gave Angelus another look, then settled back in his chair to wait for more questions, praying this would get over with soon.

After Phoebe's comment of "not human doesn't mean evil" Angelus shot Bel a look which said Told you to trust me.

Belthazor gave Angelus a nod. I thought you were giving my would-be-girlfriend a hard time out of jealousy, but don't worry, I won't forget about you.

Angelus gave Bel a wink. Would I ever do anything to get in the way of you securing a nice piece of ass? Of course not. By the way I want to kiss you so bad right now.

Beka is immediately drawn to Phoebe's side when she hears who is questioning her. With Angelus certain to draw Bel into it, she doesn't want Pheebs to be alone. She puts a hand by Phoebe's so their pinkies are touching, then looks up at Angelus, eyebrow arched in curious but not hostile question.

"I don't think anyone can honestly say you're not dedicated and hardworking." Beka laughs. "It's the first thing I noticed about you. It wasn't until I saw you smiling at Bel someone that I noticed you were lovely. It takes a hell of a lot more than looks to make someone a fitting assistant to Professor Jerusalem."

Phoebe blushes slightly.

"Thanks, Beka. I appreciate that. Professor Jerusalem makes my day challenging and I do love a challenge."
