And over here was another section of tables and chairs, still close to the food so no one accidentally starved while trying to avoid the masses.

Rodney really didn't want to know. "What would really help would be if the school wasn't overrun by a fresh crop of clueless yokels every term. I mean, you'd think there would at least be an orientation session before they got to the island. Something to weed out the ones that can't hack it," he looked disgustedly out on the crowd. "I bet half of them couldn't even pass the Turing test."

"Maybe they could," Rikku said, sticking her chin out. Just because she had no idea what he was talking about didn't mean she couldn't argue with him. "And I bet you were pretty clueless at your first picnic, too, buster."

"Yes, well, that's completely irrelevant at this point," he replied, flustered at actually being called on his ridiculous 'progress should stop with me' attitude. He knew it wasn't logical, but still.

"Besides," Rikku said cheerfully, folding her arms behind her head, "if they weren't clueless, they wouldn't be so fun to break. I've broken a few without even trying."

"Really?" Rodney perked up a bit. "Did you make any of them cry?" He knew he shouldn't be quite so excited at that possibility.

"Not cry," Rikku said, chewing her lip. "But I kinda got one to stare at me like I just switched to Greek or something. And just be all 'Hunnnnh.' Kinda. Like when the newbie's brain just snaps and they need a few seconds to recover? I always feel kinda bad, but damn, they're just fragile. You know?"

"I know that look," Rodney nodded. It was a standard reaction for most people whenever he started technobabbling. "But there's no reason to feel bad," he tried to reassure. "I mean, yeah they're fragile, but it's best to start conditioning them early instead of having their first real exposure to the unknown be during an actual crisis when their reaction could put m-, er, other people in danger."

"Also, it's really funny," Rikku sighed. "Is that horrible to say? 'Cause it is. It's hilarious."

"That's not horrible at all," Rodney smirked. "Being our entertainment is one of the only things they're good for."

"Sometimes they take their shirts off and walk around all hot and sweaty," Rikku observed.

Well, they did.

"Not enough of the girls," Rodney pointed out sadly.

"Have you tried asking them?" Rikku said. "I think most of the guys were asked, you know."

"Yes, because going up to a girl and randomly asking her to take off her shirt would, naturally, not result in me getting smacked in the face." He looked at Rikku as if she were crazy.

"Okay, I'll leave mine on," Rikku said airily. "I mean, I'm not gonna beg or anything."

Because she was evil, that's why.

"I... you... but... huh?" Rodney sputtered.

"Well, I gotta go. More shirtless guys to stare at! You know how it is."

Eeeeeeeeeeeevil.

"Life is so unfair," he pouted.
