And over here was another section of tables and chairs, still close to the food so no one accidentally starved while trying to avoid the masses.

"Man, people here are good at spotting the new folks," Joan remarked, wondering if all of the boys at this school were models in their spare time or something.

"It's a fairly small student population," Dean said. "You get to know faces. Also, people all tend to have the same shellshocked appearance when they first get here. I'm Dean, by the way."

"Joan," she replied. "Nice to meet you."

"You too. Can never have enough pretty girls around, if you ask me."

That made Joan blush. Not only were the boys around here cute, they were charming. "Well, thanks."

"So where are you from, Joan?"

"Arcadia, Maryland," Joan said. "It's about an hour and a half away from here. How about you?"

"Originally? Lawrence, Kansas. But my family was on the road most of my life, till we came here."

"My family moved to Arcadia about a year ago from ~~handwavy, la!~~," Joan said. "But we never really traveled much. It must have been interesting."

"It had its moments," Dean said. "But it's nice to be kinda settled too. Dad's here -- he's a teacher and he married the principal this summer. They've got a house in town so my brother and I have somewhere to call home outside of the dorms now. That's still kinda a novelty. I guess whatever you're not used to can seem that way."

"Is it awkward for you having your dad and stepmom teach here?" Joan asked. "My mom taught art at my old school and I hated it."

"Nah," Dean said. "It's pretty cool actually. I've TA'ed for him some -- he's been teaching Sammy and me our whole lives so we already have the subject material down. And Zoe -- my step mom -- is just an awesome woman. I liked her a lot before Dad started dating her."

Joan grinned. "Oh, good. That's definitely better than the alternative."

"And I've got a new little sister out of it too -- Gracie. She's one and the walking personification of cute. What about you -- any siblings?"

"Awww," Joan said. "I have an older brother and a younger brother. They are definitely not the walking personifications of cute."

"No, that would be your job in your family."

Oh, look, Joan was blushing again. "Thanks."
