And over here was another section of tables and chairs, still close to the food so no one accidentally starved while trying to avoid the masses.

"We have to camp?" Joan asked, wrinkling her nose.

"We did, previously," Alice said, considering this with a frown. "Perhaps we won't when the weather cools off. Winter doesn't lend itself well to cook-outs and campfires, especially not once it snows."

"I hope not," Joan said, pouting. "I don't like bugs."

"I'm not fond of them, as a rule," Alice mused, "but they can be helpful at times. I knew a caterpillar who was quite puffed up on himself, but he could direct one to useful mushrooms."

Ah, mushrooms. Joan was pretty sure that was some kind of drug reference. "So you're not new here?"

"I arrived at the beginning of the summer," Alice said. "Having left a century and a half ago. Has anyone asked you what year it is?"

That was even weirder than Angela saying she was from 1994. "Yeah, actually. I'm from this year. 2008."

"Convenient," Alice nodded. "I boarded a train in London, headed for Virginia, and arrived in Greece. Which was still less confusing that misplacing a century or so."

"This whole place is pretty confusing," Joan said.

She nodded more at that. "It is," Alice agreed. "It becomes much easier when you accept that this island obeys its own twisted logic and trying to rationalize it will only cause your head to ache."

This was, similarly, how she'd decided that electricity was simply magic. Far easier that way.

"That's probably the best advice I've gotten all day," Joan said with a smile.

"Thank you," Alice said, clasping her hands behind her and bobbing her head slightly. "I don't believe I got your name, incidentally."

"Joan Girardi," she said. "Nice to meet you."
