Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

And over here was another section of tables and chairs, still close to the food so no one accidentally starved while trying to avoid the masses.

Eric smiled, maybe the first truly genuine smile all day. "Thanks," he said. "I appreciate it."

He sighed, reaching over to one of the tables and grabbing a slice of kiwi. "So is this place really as weird as everyone's saying?" he asked. He believed -- how could he not, there was a unicorn wandering around -- but he still didn't really believe.

"Yes," Blair replied. She was more than happy to encourage Eric to be taken under her wing. "There's magic and people who aren't people. The island moved all summer. It used to be located off of the coast of Virginia."

"You mean the school was on an island off the coast of Virginia?" Eric frowned. "The website didn't say anything about that."

"It was when I got here." Blair gave him a dubious look. "Do you think I would willingly go to Baltimore?"

"So what made them decide to move from Virginia to Maryland?" Eric asked, ignoring the question for the moment. "Was there a problem with the old island?"

"This is the old island," Blair said. "It moved."

May as well rip the bandage off early. It wouldn't do Eric any good to be in denial about it.

Eric just stared at Blair for a moment, before closing his eyes and repeating his mantra for the day: "There is a unicorn. I can believe anything. There is a unicorn. I can believe anything."

"Are you sure," he asked, after taking a deep breath, "that they're not giving us all some kind of drugs? In the food or water, or something?"

"Adjusting my Wellbutrin did nothing," Blair assured him. Much as that kind of confirmation could be assuring.

Eric just sighed. "I was afraid you'd say something like that."

He looked around at all the students. "So, do you like it here?" he asked.

"Hard as it is to believe," Blair said, being surprisingly honest since Eric did, at least, understand why it would be hard to believe. "I got to throw a party in Antartica." She felt that would more than cover the various reasons why she liked the island. Then, reminded, she said, "I'm throwing an end of summer party soon. You're invited, of course."

Granted normally there wasn't the 'of course' for Eric since Blair's parties tended to be a bit too mature for even a van der Woodsen child. But Blair was happy to make changes now that Serena was gone and Eric didn't like her either.

"In Antarctica?" Eric asked. "That's... I'm sad I missed that. It must have been cold, though?"

"There was a polar bear guest," Blair said. "Chuck took pictures. Did you know he was here?"

Blair made a mental note to grab Chuck and make sure they were on the same page about taking the best care of poor little Eric.

"Chuck's here, too?"

Definitely not coming out of the closet. Not if he met the love of his life.

"No, I hadn't heard- Oh, wait," Eric said. "Is this where he got shipped off to?"

"Yes," Blair said, still far too amused at Chuck's stupidity. "He keeps talking about leaving but I think he's grown to like it here."

Eric nodded. "I... guess it's a good school, then." So he'd made a good choice to come here.

But he still wasn't coming out.

"The classes are different but the teachers make up for it," Blair said. At least the teachers she'd liked.

"Yeah -- there were two cooking classes on the syllabus? Well, a cooking class and a home ec class."

"I didn't notice," Blair said. Because cooking. Please.

Eric laughed, just a little. "Neither did I, really," he confided. "Mom pointed it out."

This would be Blair boggling again, though this time she didn't mind showing it. "Lily thinks she can cook now?"

"What? No!" That had Eric laughing rather more than a little. "I think she was trying to find problems with the school, so I'd go to St. Jude's at home, instead. She asked why any school would need two cooking classes."

"So you want to be here," Blair said, just to make sure she had that clear.

"I... wanted to be somewhere other than St. Jude's," Eric replied, a little carefully. He so didn't want to be going into his reasons. "So I figured I'd pull a Serena and go to boarding school. This one looked good, online." He looked around. "They left a lot out of the brochure."

Blair could work with that. "Tell Lily they have a prep program for professional chefs. She should calm down about that."
