And over here was another section of tables and chairs, still close to the food so no one accidentally starved while trying to avoid the masses.

"Right!" Ned grinned in realization of that. He was a slow one, sometimes. "It's the crowd thing that can get to me. Not used to it. But, you seem to be doing okay with it."

"Berlin is a big city. I am used to crowds. Though talking to them, that is a little different."

"I agree," he said with a nod. "Though, Coeur d'Coeurs isn't very big at all. I've never been out of the country before. Barely even been out of my home state. First time for that here too."

"Coeur d'Coeurs. Heart of hearts, ja? That is an American city?" He didn't seem French.

"Yeah," he said, mildly surprised even though he knew he shouldn't have been. "You're the first to know the meaning without me translating. It's..."

He pointed up but then realized how that looked. "Uh, north of here. It's not in the sky or anything."

"I know a little French," Lola said. "Not as well as I know English, but we learn two foreign languages in my school in Germany." She looked up for a moment, smiling. "And that's good. It would be hard for you to go home, since you don't even climb trees."

"It's on my list of things to learn," he said even though it wasn't. "I do other things though. Just not climbing. So you don't think I sit in my room and wait for something to scare me."

"That is good. What do you do, then? When you are not standing by trees."

"Cook, mostly," he said. "Uh, sometimes I read but it's mostly cooking. One thing I'm pretty good at."

"You are a chef! That is a good hobby."

"Not an official chef but yeah, I maybe wanna be," he said, smiling at her reaction. "I'm better at desserts than anything else."

"Deserts are the best foods. What is your favorite?"

"Pies," he said happily. "Just about any kind. Big, little, sweet, not so sweet. Pies. Yeah."

Lola couldn't help but grin at his enthusiasm. "I would like to try one of your pies, some time."

"I'll make you one," Ned said, always happy to talk shop. And spread the pies around. "I'm supposed to be making an insane amount for someone for a party too so you might get one there. Not a cook?"

"Nein. I can microwave dinners."

"Which is sometimes even better than cooking," he joked. "Harder to ruin a microwave dinner than a dinner you make yourself. No chance of using flour instead of sugar or something."

"And harder to burn it." Though she had skills in that area, too. "Maybe I can learn to cook here, too. Do they have classes?"

"I think they might," he said thoughtfully. "I'm taking one on surviving my own cooking. I'm...hopeful that we're not making anything deadly."

Lola blinked. "I hope so, too. I am taking Art and History. Maybe not so exciting."

"I'm taking an art class too," he said. "Are you taking the hands on one?"

Lola nodded. "Yes. That is it. You are in it, too?"

"Yep," he said and nodded. "Figured maybe I could learn how to draw anything but stick figures. Finger painting would be a step up."

"You paint fingers?"

"Well, no." He paused. "Well, you can! But, finger painting means, instead of a brush, you use your fingers. It's messy but it's fun."
