Tony's first airplane ride wasn't as interesting than he'd hoped. It was rather like riding the bus, only with less space and more pretzels. Although "boring" was probably the way to go when it came to air travel.

He'd spent a bad half hour in Customs after his flight had landed. They'd pulled him from line and fingerprinted him and for a bit he was afraid he'd be barred from entering the US. But they apparently realized he was neither a drug dealer nor a terrorist and let him through.

He retrieved his oversized duffle from the baggage claim and followed the instructions on the crumpled printout of an email from the school. He took a quick detour to buy a horribly overpriced breakfast sandwich with his shiny new American money. (Dollar bills? What was wrong with coins?) He made a wrong turn on the way back, but he managed to orient himself and find his way to the Portalocity terminal.

A piece of paper tacked on the wall in one corner of the room said "Fandom High." Looked like he was in the right place. He sat down on a bench under the sign, duffle near his feet, and clutched his laptop case as if it might walk away. (It wouldn't, would it? Arra would've warned him if that was a possibility.) It seemed he was the first to arrive. Not surprising, since he'd taken the red eye out of Vancouver. Late-night flights made it easier to say goodbyes to vampire ex-boyfriends.

"You just told me you're married to a girl barely out of high school whose mother would kill you, if the entire town didn't get to you first." Jess said. "You're a whackjob."

"Kirk sold t-shirts at the wedding," Anakin told him coldly, "and Taylor gave a toast. No version of you was invited."

"Rory wouldn't get married without inviting me," Jess said, even though, considering how he'd left, he wasn't entirely confident about that. "But that doesn't matter, because she didn't get married."

Grown men don't say "yuh-huh" to annoying little punks.

So Anakin pulled out a holo of the wedding and showed it instead.

There. Much more mature.

Jess didn't know exactly what the hell that thing was, but he couldn't ignore that it was definitely showing Rory. He hated how his feelings started betraying him when all he was doing was looking at her, and he was determined to not let any of them show to this guy.

"I don't think I caught your name," he said stoically.

Anakin quirked up an eyebrow. "I hadn't mentioned it. I'm Master Anakin Skywalker."

"Oh, a Master. That's just perfect," Jess said. "She looks older on that thing."

"She turns twenty in October," Anakin replied.

"So, who is that then? 'Cause that's not my Rory."

If there was an emphasis on the my, it couldn't be helped.

"She's my Rory," Anakin replied, and there was definitely some possessiveness involved. "But if I remember the history correctly, I'm pretty sure your version won't have anything to do with you, either."

"You don't know anything about me or my Rory," Jess said. "Your 'history' is going to change when I make things better. The Rory I know would never fall for a guy like you."

"One that sticks around, you mean?"

Jess was starting to realize that this guy really did know something about him and Rory. He was also starting to realize that if he kept talking, the shuttle might end up without a driver who could see straight. He didn't know that much about Anakin, after all.

"I'm going to get on the bus now," he said, his voice cold.

Anakin pressed his lips together. "Stay out of my way and you might not end up in the lake today," he warned. "Might."

Jess glared, starting to wonder if this year was going to be worth it as he got on and slumped down in his seat.
