Living On Your Own - Friday - Period One

There was a Meg standing in front of the class today rather than the Tyler that was usually there. She looked way more cheerful than any human being had any right to be this early in the morning.

"Okay, so Professor Durden has some stuff to do that's not here so that's why I'm standing here today and not him. Don't worry, I'm not going to teach anything. It's the last day of class and I don't think any of you would listen to me if I tried to teach anyways," she said. Meg also knew that some people couldn't handle the bouncy spaz that was her in the mornings. "Today we're going to watch a movie that has nothing to do with this class but, oh my god, is Russell Crowe hot in that little man-skirt."

"OH!" Meg bounced again. "Professor Durden told me to tell you that you guys rocked. And I agree. I'll even add an 'you're awesome'. You're awesome. There. Okay, movie time!"

Katchoo didn't have a panic-face, or at least she tried to never let on that she did most of the time. At the moment, she was failing.

"Can you stay? Do you think they'll let you?"

Ask the Ten Thousand Dollar Question. "I don't know." In truth, she was kind of afraid to ask, because asking meant the possibility of hearing no. "I don't even know if they can afford it."

Briefly, and with a pang of guilt, Katchoo wondered how Emma had managed to set her up here for however long; that moment of guilt quickly segued into frustration at the thought of that $850,000 out of reach in a vault in Zurich.

She swallowed and, deciding she did want to know the answer, asked, "Would you want to?"

Francine frowned at her for a long moment, before realizing she was asking that seriously. "You mean give up my treasured social status as worst clarinet player in history of school bands ever and girl seen naked by the most members of the Puncture High student body for some island where people can turn into flying horses, we get free trips to France, and my best friend magically turns up in the middle of the summer when I was starting to wonder if I'd ever see her again? Let me think about it."

She reached across the aisle to smack lightly at Katchoo's arm . "Of course I want to, you doof!"

"Ow, hey -- what was that for, you goofy broad?" demanded Katchoo, although she was actually (contain your shock, Ichigo) grinning. "You want to stay, tell 'em so!"

"I will," Francine assured her, her friend's grin teasing an answering one from her despite any worries that it wouldn't, you know. Work. "...Possibly I should leave the flying ponies and the you part out when I talk this place up, though."

Katchoo snorted. "Yeah, I don't think that awful girl who lived in the house under the power lines with the roaches would make a great selling point. But hey, you've met people and classes are giving you exercise and . . ." She thought of the painting. "You're developing a new appreciation for art?"

"I'm definitely getting something out of it. Me!" Francine giggled, then turned serious. "And they don't think you're awful." Not that she could deny the rest of the list, though she could keep her mouth shut about how much of it she'd actually heard pass her mother's lips.

"Sorry, must've gotten them confused with the rest of the neighborhood," said Katchoo, and was that a little bitterness leaking out there? Could've been, yes. Consider it exhaust from the mental gears suddenly turning at full speed. "We'll figure out some way to keep you here. Scholarships and things, maybe. There's gotta be a way."
