Library [08/04]

Sam was in a much better mood today than he'd been last week, thanks to Zoe and his dad being back to their normal selves. At least, he was in a good mood until he opened the door to the library and walked right into a black stump, tripping and nearly spilling coffee all over himself. When no amount of kicking the stump seemed to make it move, Sam sighed, and put a note on the door, warning people to watch their step.

Sam checked books back in, sifted through his email, and generally tried not to trip over anything.

Sam had some cookies to share with Dean for lunch.

It was entirely possible that the warning sign was temporarily missing from the door.

Sam put the sign back up on the door and went off into the stacks to try to find something to read.

Peter? Pay attention to warning signs? Surely you jest.

"Oof," he said, after he fell. Then "Shit!" as he quickly TKed the bag holding the coffee so that it floated in midair and didn't spill.

Just so the priorities here were clear, Peter knew better than to spill liquids around books... at least when Sam was around.

Sam came out as soon as he heard the commotion and ran up next to Peter. "Hey, are you okay?" he asked. Only then did he notice the bag, and reached over to grab it. To keep priorities clear, he was more concerned about Peter than potential spilling. At least, for the moment.

"Thank you," Peter said, glad he didn't have to concentrate on the bag anymore. He pushed himself up off of the floor, checking for damage. "When did the library become an obstacle course?"

"Since this morning," Sam said, looking Peter over for any signs of injury. "Didn't you see the sign?"

"Sign?" Peter asked, giving Sam a puzzled look.

Sam tried not to smirk, but he couldn't help it. "The sign on the door?" he said. "You know, the one you had to walk through to get inside?"

"Maybe I was so busy reading it that that's why I tripped," Peter said. Which of course was so not the case.

"Yes, I'm sure that was totally the reason," Sam said. "Are you all right now?"

"I think so." He brushed dust off of his pants. "Might be a little sore later, but I'll live."

"That was a nice save you made," Sam said, offering the bag back to Peter. "I guess it proves your instincts can make your powers kick in."

"I just imagined the look on your face if the books got coffee on them," Peter said.

"I...okay, I would have freaked out," Sam admitted. "But I would have known it was an accident."

"All the same, it was good I was here to save the day," Peter said.

"Of course, the day wouldn't have needed saving if you knew how to read," Sam teased.

"I try to be an optimist, Sam," Peter reminded him.

"Unfortunately, the world is made for pessimists," Sam replied.

"One of those days, huh?" Peter asked, with sympathy.

"Every day is like that," Sam said, shrugging. "I mean, not every day is a stump-in-the-doorway kind of day, but..."

"Clearly I didn't get here with sugar soon enough," Peter said. "Anything you wanna talk about? No, scratch that. It's you. Is there anything you should be talking to your best friend about?"

"I don't mind talking about things when I need to," Sam said, not exactly answering the question.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't aware today was Opposite Day," Peter replied.

"I like to talk about things more than Dean. I can never get anything out of him," Sam said.

"True," Peter admitted, since it was. "But that doesn't exactly make you Chatty Cathy."

"I talk to you when I need to talk about something," Sam said. "It's not like I try to consciously hide things from you. Most of the time," he said.

"A-ha!" Peter said. "So what are you hiding?"

"I'm not hiding anything, I promise," Sam said. "Since when have I ever been as optimistic as you are?"

"Never," Peter admitted. "But I didn't know if maybe this was a new thing. Or a continuation of last week."

"No, I'm okay from last week, really. And I talked to you then, didn't I?"

"True," Peter said. "Still. I had to check. BFF thing."

"You don't have to worry about me, okay?" Sam said, not wanting Peter to be concerned when he didn't need to be. "I'm fine."

"I don't tell you to get rid of your hobbies," Peter said.

"Don't you have any better hobbies? A sport of some kind? Art? Basket weaving?"

"I thought about acting but - " Peter made a face. "Nah."

"Worrying about me can be a lot of work," Sam warned. "Just ask Dean. He acts like it's a full time job."

"Yeah but you worry about me in return," Peter said. "It evens out."

"There's a lot more to worry about with me," Sam pointed out. "That doesn't exactly make it fair."

"You can't possibly be having a 'my possible future emo is worse than yours' competition with me, are you?" Peter asked. "Because I'll arm wrestle you if I have to."

"Your possible future emo has no way of happening," Sam said. "And you don't want to arm wrestle me, because I will totally beat you."

"Like your emo is some rock-hard guarantee?" Peter replied. "If mine doesn't have a 100% chance of happening, neither does yours."

"You really think that?" Sam asked, sounding more serious about it than he wanted to let on.

"Cross my heart," Peter said, looking Sam in the eye. "I wouldn't lie about that, Sam. Promise."

"That makes me feel better, thank you," Sam said, giving Peter a genuine smile.

"I'd totally beat you at arm wrestling though," Peter told him.

Sam laughed. "You wish."

"I know," Peter replied.

It's Monday again? Can't we just skip Monday one of these weeks?
