Living On Your Own, Friday, Period 1

Tyler was not wearing his pink, frilly apron today. He took class much more seriously.

Instead, it was one with a tuxedo print.

He seemed in high spirits as he waited for the students to gather, and if his movements were a little stiff, you'd have to know him well to notice. The bruise on his cheek, though -- that was a little harder to miss.

"Happy Friday," he greeted. "We are cooking today. Cooking's important, both because it's cheaper than going out all the time, and because it's safer -- if you cook for yourself, you know what's in the food." This was perhaps more important to Tyler than it was to most people. "And don't say you can't cook, ninety percent of it is just following directions and I know you can all read."

"Today we're going to make chili and then Meg will show you how to bake brownies. Chili's a great specialty to have because the ingredients are cheap, most people like it, it's easy, and it stores well, so you can make a huge batch and eat it all week." He demonstrated the steps to preparing a simple chili, and handed out recipes for that and for vegetarian chili. Once the pot of chili was bubbling away, he added, "and now, after my TA demonstrates, it's your turn to cook. Ingredients are at the workstations back there. Work alone or in pairs. And if you get into a food fight, you get to clean it up." He did have his limits.

"I'm not on drugs, I swear," Katchoo said, the abruptness of the disclaimer belying the nonchalant tone. "I got turned into a painting last week, 's why I wasn't here."

"Aw, geez," Katchoo muttered. "I have no idea how it happened. One minute I was working on a painting, next thing I knew I was the painting, and then it was a week later . . ."

Katchoo rubbed at her elbow and grimaced. "Got a constant urge to put on lotion but fine," she said, a subtle shrug of one shoulder indicating an extremely relative value of 'fine.' This was usually where she got yelled at and ordered to report to detention, and she had an expectant look on her face, like she was prepared to hear those words next.

Katchoo's eyes widened for just a second before she got her reaction back under control and shook her head. "I've had a couple." Stumbled into them, sure, and probably not the sort of jobs he was thinking of, but details. "I think I'm good."

Genuinely caught off-guard by the lack of detention, Katchoo blinked at him, as if waiting for the "Gotcha" moment. "Maybe it was just the watercolors. Oughta stick to oils for a while at least."

"Photography?" Katchoo grimaced. "And have to fight with aperture settings and all that precision crap? I'd throw the camera out the window first."

"The arty photography stuff is, yeah," Katchoo said with a shrug. "For people with too much time on their hands and a love of memorizing numbers or some crap like that. 'sides, it's an expensive hobby."
