Living On Your Own, Friday, Period 1

Tyler was not wearing his pink, frilly apron today. He took class much more seriously.

Instead, it was one with a tuxedo print.

He seemed in high spirits as he waited for the students to gather, and if his movements were a little stiff, you'd have to know him well to notice. The bruise on his cheek, though -- that was a little harder to miss.

"Happy Friday," he greeted. "We are cooking today. Cooking's important, both because it's cheaper than going out all the time, and because it's safer -- if you cook for yourself, you know what's in the food." This was perhaps more important to Tyler than it was to most people. "And don't say you can't cook, ninety percent of it is just following directions and I know you can all read."

"Today we're going to make chili and then Meg will show you how to bake brownies. Chili's a great specialty to have because the ingredients are cheap, most people like it, it's easy, and it stores well, so you can make a huge batch and eat it all week." He demonstrated the steps to preparing a simple chili, and handed out recipes for that and for vegetarian chili. Once the pot of chili was bubbling away, he added, "and now, after my TA demonstrates, it's your turn to cook. Ingredients are at the workstations back there. Work alone or in pairs. And if you get into a food fight, you get to clean it up." He did have his limits.

This class couldn't have come at a better time considering the brownie incident of last week.

That's why Gavin was paying CLOSE attention.

Gavin found his way over and started sifting through ingredients. He thought of going with chili but he'd ruined brownies once so he chose those and started reading the ingredients and getting the prep together.

Chili and brownie hybrid!

And this one includes beer. It's like chili and Guinness Brownies! Two great tastes that taste great together!

Oooh.

I don't think mushrooms belong within a hundred yards of chili, but otherwise I would be all about that.

Meg was looking bouncy and cheerful as always.

"Okay, so I'll be showing you guys how to make brownies. I prefer homemade ones rather than the stuff that comes out of a box but we don't always have the time or the money to make the good stuff. There is one rule for those of you new to baking, whether you're making homemade brownies or boxed brownies: Follow the directions. Follow them exactly. You have to know make good plain brownies before experimenting with different ingredients," Meg said. She paused and hoped that didn't sound like she was talking about weed. "Anyways. As long as you follow the directions you should be fine."

Meg spent the next couple minutes mixing together the ingredients for a regular set of brownies, telling everyone what she was adding as she went on. Then she poured the batter in a pan and stuck it in the oven.

"You stick them in a 350 degree oven for about forty-five minutes. You know they're done when you stick a toothpick in the center and it comes out clean. Pretty simple."

Meg would most certainly share her brownies. If she didn't eat them all herself first.

Mmm, chili. Having skipped out on breakfast, Amber was hungry.

Sam felt a lot more comfortable near the oven than he would have a year ago, but he still put a lot of effort into making sure everything went into the chili in the right size and right order.

So there had been brownies the other night after escaping the painting, but so what? There could be more. Katchoo was kind of freaked by how cheerful Meg was, though. How could anybody be that cheerful all the time? It had to be an act. And yet, she wasn't really convinced it was, which was kind of unsettling.

Her first two years of high school, Katchoo would never have bothered to apologize for her absence from class; that would have been the majority of the school year spent apologizing. She'd promised Emma she'd try and make a clean start, though, so here she was, hands shoved in her pockets and her gaze fixed firmly on some spot just past Tyler's shoulder, about to make a sincere excuse for something she'd never thought she'd ever have to say.

"Hi."

Well, it was a start.
