Francine tilted her head about six ways from Sunday, but nope, she just couldn't picture any way that birds and mice could be helpful when you're making a dress. "Um. How do they do that, if you don't mind me asking?"

Giselle tilted her head. "Why, they help me sew, of course."

"Help you..." This was, Francine suspected, shaping up to be a mini-version of the kind of 'believe or break, those are your options' moment she'd had when she'd figured out people could be horses. With wings.

"I wish we had mice that helped with the housework," she said at last. "The ones at our place just leave droppings in the back of the cupboards."

"Oh, but they will," Giselle said seriously. "They just want to be asked nicely."

Probably the mousetraps her grandma put out for the farm mice didn't count as asking nicely. Even if they were baited with peanut butter. "Do they understand English? I don't think ours do."

"Well, I don't think the ones here speak as much as the mice at home," she said thoughtfully. "But they seem very nice. Maybe just some nice cheese if you can call them?"

And again with the probably-not-attached-to-a-trap observation. "Food is a universal language," Francine answered thoughtfully.

"Oh yes!" she agreed. "Like when Meg makes cupcakes!"

There were two important factors at play here, and Francine tackled them in order of priority: "Really, she makes cupcakes? What floor does she live on?" Followed by, "Do they talk to mice?"
