Chad gave Alice the smallest of smiles back. "Not this time," he admitted. "But last time yours were the only requests, anyway. You might be able to request something I actually know this time."

"Oh, I might," she said, perking up slightly at that. "Let me think for a moment. Do you know anything by ... Bjork? Cake? Cibo Matto?"

Only one of those was she going to pronounce correctly.

Chad grinned a little at the list, and, quietly, politely, with a brotherly sort of nod of encouragement, corrected Alice's pronunciation. "And, yeah, I know all of those. How about..."

After a thoughtful pause, he started to pluck out the baseline to 'The Distance,' throwing in a few extra things to make the missing melody a little more evident, playing along without even needing to watch his fingers. He was more interested in seeing when and if Alice picked up on a note of recognition.

The verse seemed somewhat familiar, but it was the bit leading into the chorus -- where he plucked out a few extra high notes for those descending dissonant trumpets -- that she beamed and put the right name to it, and she joined in just before the chorus.

"... for whom he -- still -- burns
He's going the distance
He's going for speed
She's all alone - ALL ALONE - all alone in her time of need!
Because he's racing and pacing and --
"

She flushed. "I don't know many of the words yet."

"That's okay," Chad said, grinning a bit that she got it. "You still got a lot of it pretty good. I like Cake; they're one of my favourites which is totally not mun-inspired, really."

"They're sort of sweetly bitter, or bitterly sweet, I haven't decided which yet," Alice mused. "I rather like that. There's something cynical to it, but not entirely dark."

*cough* mun has never done that. ever. really. *halo*

"...And the trumpets," Chad added. Because mmmm. Vincent DiFiore's trumpets...

"Trumpet's big in mariachi, too, so I think I might just really like the sound of good trumpets."

[identity profile] notyourpawn.livejournal.com 2008-07-06 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
"I don't believe I've encountered mariachi yet," Alice said, frowning slightly as she pondered. "I'm not quite clear on genre. I've been starting at A and progressing forward. I'm only to the Ds so far."

"I grew up around a lot of it," Chad said with a nod. "I even have a jacket given to me by a teacher here who used to play it. You should come visit sometime, and I'll show you."

"I shall, then," Alice smiled. "Which room is yours? I'm in five-eleven, with Francine."

"Three twelve," Chad told her with a nod. "With Katara. I don't think I know Francine."

"She and I started at the same time, at the beginning of the summer," Alice explained. "She's very nice. I believe she's from, if not this time, then one very near to it."

"Kind of like me, then," Chad said with a nod. That reminded him, as well... "And you seem to be adapting pretty well, Alice. Is that right?"

"I think so," she smiled, faintly. "It was ... rough, near the beginning. There's so much that I've no clue about, and ... well. My doctor said that I was still 'fragile,' and argued against my release. Perhaps he was right. I don't feel fragile."

She never had. Not even when she was mad and lying in an asylum.

"You don't look fragile to me, either," Chad offered.

"Thank you," Alice said, flushing. "And thank you for hiring me, as well. I rather enjoy my position, at the shop, especially since I've now got money to get clothes. And some music discs of my own."

"You do like it, though?" Chad asked. "I know it gets kind of boring, but I appreciate your help there."

"I'm never bored," Alice said, eyes alight. "Even when the store's empty. I've progressed as far as the Ds. I play with Dinah and I discover new music, and then when customers come in, I help them. I love working there."

Nervously, she added, "Am I doing all right, as an employee? I do hope I've been all right. I had some difficulty with the cash register, to start, but I think I've mostly worked that out, by now."

Chad shook his head a little. "You're doing great," he said, with a nod. "I'm sure Melody would think so, too."

And, really, her response to him saying it was kind of boring was all he needed to know that. She really did enjoy the music and discovering it, and, sure, a business was supposed to be about selling stuff and making money, but Chad could never see the store like that. It was there for precisely what Alice was doing: enjoying music. He couldn't ask for anything more in an employee, really.

She even had a cute cat, so bonus.

A cute attention-starved cat, who rather enjoyed the company of the customers. Alice was the happiest employee she could be.

"It's Melody who owns the store, isn't it?" Alice asked. "I wish I could have met her."

Chad nodded. "Yup. She owns the store, but she's on tour with her own band right now. She's a lot of fun."
