"Everything changes," she said. "And I can't keep up with it, so I forget."

"You forget purposefully?" Hannibal asked.

She blinked at him. "That wouldn't be really forgetting now, would it? But it happens... so what's the point in trying to remember when it'll only make for a headache?"

"I just didn't think memories worked like that," he said, frowning. "Even if I want to forget, I can't make myself."

"Eventually things just sort of... blur," she tried to explain, "and there's no point in working at bringing any memory in particular into focus."

"That doesn't make sense," Hannibal said. "Memories are eternal. You know, memories, like the corner of my mind. Misty water colored memories..."

He probably didn't need to sing Streisand to prove his point.

"It doesn't have to make sense to happen," she said earnestly. "Because it does happen, and I don't remember."

"I am so confused," Hannibal admitted. "I think I'd prefer the monocle and insanity to forgetting."

She tilted her head thoughtfully.

"It's..." Viki tried to think of how to explain it. "...how old are you?"

"Seventeen," he said. "I look good for my age."

No, he just...looked like a seventeen year old boy.

She nodded. "How old do you think I am?"

"Fifteen? Sixteen?" Hannibal randomly guessed.

"I don't know how old I am," she said, sounding unconcerned. "My looks never change, but I've been through five different wars..."

Of course, added into that, was a lot of time and space teleportation. There were reasons Viki was so confused.

"Where in the hell are you from?" Hannibal had to ask.

"Originally?" Viki blinked at him. "I don't remember."

"Are you going to forget me?" Hannibal asked.

"As long as I am here? It's less likely," though, really, still possible, "but once I leave... well..."

"Is it some form of weird amnesia?" Hannibal asked. "Like in the soap operas?"

It was just a severely bad memory in general coupled with too many years of time-travelling.

"What's a soap opera?"

"Type of television show," Hannibal explained. "Filled with evil twins, amnesia, rare tropical diseases, pregnancies, magic, and singing doctors. Trashy, trashy stuff."

"I don't think that sort of thing exists where I normally wind up," she said, almost thoughtfully. "Soap operas, I mean."

"Missing out," Hannibal said. "Great stuff when you're faking sick and need something to do because your mom said you can't go outside when you've supposedly got pneumonia. Pfft, moms."

"If I remember," Viki said, because that was always the crux of things. "I'll try to figure out a way to see one then."

"Come find me if you can't," Hannibal said. "And if you can't remember me, I'll just find you."

She beamed. "I'll try to remember," Viki said earnestly. "Really, I will."
