Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

"I'm Dean." Dean's grin widened. "I like your nametag."

Angela beamed. "Well, if I'm going to wear a nametag, it should really be the best little nametag it can be."

"I hear ya." He grinned. "So anything in particular you want to ask about so far or should I just give you the usual rundown?"

"One, main question..." Angela said, smile turning a little hesitant. She pointed towards the horizon. "Icebergs?"

"Island's gone walkabout this summer," Dean said. "We're currently off the coast of Antarctica." He paused. "Has anyone mentioned that this place is a little weird?"

Angela shook her head slowly. Moving island? Crazy, right?

"My dad used the word quirky," she added.

Dean chuckled. "Well this is probably the quirkiest place that ever quirked. But in a good way. Where are you from?"

"DC." Angela was back on comfortable ground here. "I didn't come far."

"That all may depend on the next question," Dean said. "What year is it?"

Angela gave him a funny look. "Ninety-four."

Dean grinned. "Not too far off when I came from. It was 1997 where I was when I first came here. It's 99 there now. Here it's 2008."

"You're messing with me," Angela decided, still with a slight smile. "Right?"

Dean shook his head. "Sorry. It's real. But you're not too far off that there'll be a lot of culture shock on top of the usual Fandom shock at least. My last little sibling came from the 1800s."

"1800's," Angela parroted, a little disbelievingly.

"You're sure this isn't just weird hazing? I've heard about that kind of thing..."

"I admit most of the student body gets a kick out of explaining everything to new students, but it's all true."

"I used to do it," Angela admitted. "At my high school. But that was mostly a teasing 'watch out for the coleslaw' and which teachers are sleeping together."

"Well as far as I know, the coleslaw is fine here, and as for the sleeping together thing, well my Dad just married the principal so that's one pairing I'm pretty sure of."

Angela took that all on board. "Is that weird?" Well, if her dad married her principal she'd be weirded out.

Her principal had been a man. But that wasn't the point.

"You think it would be, wouldn't you?" Dean said. "But nah. Zoe's great. She's not my mom, but she makes Dad happy. And we have a little sister now who's cute personified in a small human package. My brother's got her right now."

"Aww." Angela grinned. "Okay, so that's a definite high point, right there."

"What's her name?"

"Gracie."

"I always wanted siblings," Angela told him. "Probably would've driven me crazy if I'd had them, but--" she shrugged.

"Oh Sammy -- my brother -- drives me crazy on a regular basis," Dean said. "But you get used to it."

"It's kind of a sibling requirement, right?" Angela asked. "I should probably swot up on this stuff if I'm going to be a convincing fake one."

"Also remember that little siblings always do what their big siblings tell them to," Dean said immediately.
