Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"An interesting line of work," Fraser said, used to this particular thing now. "What brings you down here? We haven't really, thankfully, had a pressing need for forensics."

"I'm not surprised you'd never heard of such, I admit. There are only three of us in the New World and of those three, I have the dubious honor of being the only one on active duty."

Mike, her patchwork terrier, trotted over then. He was done with his water, the bowl in his mouth as he settled on the ground next to her.

"The Duke of New Amsterdam has requested that I take something of a sabbatical from my position to teach here," she said with a smile that managed not to be bitter only by a sheer act of will.

"As I am a loyal citizen and servant of the Crown, I made my way here as soon as possible."

She looked him over thoughtfully, considering for a moment before continuing.

"Might I ask what brought you? I am quite pleased to find the security of the campus in the hands of a trained officer such as yourself, but it is somewhat surprising."

"I was previously employed as liaison at the Canadian consulate in Chicago," Fraser explained. "After several years there, I decided a change was in order. An opportunity was presented to me and I decided to take it. Nothing too interesting, unfortunately."

"Chicago?"

Her eyes widened. That was barely an outpost. A very rough sort of place for a gentleman to be stationed.

"Well, then, I suppose I will feel very secure. No incompetent would fare well in Chicago."

"That's quite kind of you to say, Detective Crown Investigator," he said, smiling. "Before Chicago, I was stationed in Canada, as the uniform would suggest. I first came to Chicago on the trail of my father's killers, and for various reasons remained there a liaison to the Canadian consulate."

A Canadian consulate in Chicago? Had she really had her head so far into her work that she'd missed that piece of information?

"DCI Garrett or Doctor Garrett is just fine, Constable, though I appreciate your use of my title.

"And may I express my sympathies for your loss. As well as my admiration for your tenacity and dedication to justice. While I won't say such dedication is rare in this day and age, it is heartening to hear."

She liked other people who took their job seriously.

"Of course, Doctor," he said, nodding. "And thank you. Justice was, eventually, served for both my father and those who caused his death. That's all I wanted."

"Very good."

She looked around for a moment, her gaze flicking down to Mike shortly before she spoke again.

"Please consider any skills I may have at your disposal should you require assistance as such."

Abby Irene smiled faintly.

"Hopefully, nothing of the like should come up, but I make the offer all the same."

"Thank you kindly for the offer," Fraser said appreciatively. "There are...some unusual occurrences that happen every so often that your skill set might be useful for."

"I had assumed as such, considering the nature of the island itself as I've been told of it," she admitted.

"Yes, this place is quite unusual," he agreed. "And I don't know what you've heard but I'm sure you will be hearing a lot more."

"I've only heard that the island moves, much as historians believe Atlantis and Lemuria were capable of doing."

She raised an eyebrow at the Constable.

"Is there anything in particular I should be aware of?"

"Our last vice principal went a little power hungry and tried to take over the island," Fraser said. "And he let loose demons and beasts."

Her eyes went a touch hard and her back straightened.

"Certainly not the sort of gentleman I would want to work under," she said with a shake of her head. "I assume that he has since been removed from the position?"

"He has," Fraser said, nodding. "It took a bit of elbow grease but he is gone. Good riddance."

"Demonologists and necromancers usually do. They have a terrible habit of leaving a stain."

"Good riddance indeed. There's been some efforts to stamp out the practices, of course, but you know how that is. Knowledge is necessary, even when it can be turned towards terrible ends."

"Indeed," he said, nodding. "He's been one of the many unusual occurrences we've had the pleasure of hosting. I don't want to overwhelm you on your first day though."

She settled her shoulders.

"I assure you, I don't overwhelm easily, though I appreciate your concern."

Abby Irene waved her hand and gave him a smile.

"I'm sure there are other topics we could move onto. It's best not to discuss the demonic any more than is necessary."

"Indeed," he agreed. "And there will be time for the more...unusual talk. What are you teaching this semester?"

"I decided on a basic cryptozoology course," she informed him with a faint smile. "It's a relative interesting topic, useful, and not too heavily academic, at least not in my opinion."
