Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

Despite the fact that they were still in Antarctica, the weather for the picnic was beautiful. It was sunny, warm, and clear enough to see many of the icebergs circling the island from the school's location. If people were still cold, there was more warm food than usual out on the tables, and hot drinks were being kept well-stocked.

Along with the tables and chairs near the food, there was a table of nametags, and two signs: one listing the Big Sibling/Little Sibling pairings, and one listing rooms and roommates for the new students.

It was time for the picnic to begin!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Hinata was... not entirely sure how her name had been signed up for a sibling, but she assumed it had something to do with her father making the decision.

Nonetheless, she showed up early and started looking around for someone names Bender.

Bender probably looked like someone named Bender. The extendable arms, the nickel content, and a certain serial number stamp.

In case that wasn't obvious, he was picking at a 'Bender' sticker affixed to his torso while scanning the crowd.

Mark. Meatbag. Nothing worth taking. Hmmm.

She spotted the nametag. "A-Ano," Hinata said hesitantly, as she went over to the... robot? "Bender-san? W-Welcome to Fandom. I a-am Hinata, y-your school assigned s-sibling."

"Yeah?" Bender looked her over. "I'm Bender. So, what have you done to get put here?"

"My f-father sent me to g-gain confidence," she told Bender. It was working, slightly. "I h-hope your j-journey here was an e-easy one?"

"Swirling lights, clocks running backwards, my arm came off." Bender detached his left arm with his right hand and waved it at her. He took a quick moment to scan for anything valuable. "You'd think the professor could invent something that didn't fall apart."

She wasn't, really, sure what to make of him. "Is y-your arm a-alright?"

"What this? Yeah." Bender screwed his arm back in. Time to get the lay of the land. "What do you meatbags do for fun around here?"

"...m-meatbags...?"

Bender rolled his eyes. No, really, they swivelled. "Humans. Mutants. Lobster-creatures." He reached out poke her arm, and because maybe all 21st century humans were slow, clarified, "Not robots."

...lobster creatures?

She glanced down at the poke. More confused. "T-There's a b-bowling alley, I hear? A-And a m-movie t-theater..."

"Any of those places sell beer?" Not that Bender was looking buy some, not exactly.

"T-There's a bar in t-town," she said. "It's c-called Caritas, I t-think."

"You don't know?" Bender sounded shocked, then suspicious, "You're not one of those teetotallers, are you?"

"F-Father would disapprove," she said, trying to explain. "A-And t-there's too m-many people there."

"Eh, he's not here is he?" Bender shrugged. "And you don't need people to drink. Some of my happiest memories are just me and a bottle."

"H-His opinion s-still matters," Hinata said quietly. "A-And I t-think that I'd r-rather not."

"Only if you're dumb enough to get caught," muttered Bender, as he rummaged inside his torso, pulling out and then dropping the empty bottle in disgust. "If you don't drink," Bender sounded disbelieving of that, "Then what do you do?"

"I r-read," she said slowly. "I s-study, I t-train... and I w-work on my c-confidence."

"That looks like it's working," Bender said, meaning the opposite.

"Thank you," she said with calm dignity, reminding herself what Reno had told her. "Is t-there anything e-else I c-can do for you?"

"Let me take you out for a drink," Bender was a semi-professional bad influence, and he had to do something for entertainment.

"There can even be alcohol-free beer." For her. Well, no, he probably didn't even mean that.

There was no way to gracefully bow out of that. Hinata wished she'd been a bit more specific.

"I s-suppose o-one drink wouldn't b-be so bad," she said. "B-But only o-one."

"Sure. One." After all one drink could be a big one, and paying for things wasn't a concept Bender embraced when he had the money.

"I guess I'll see you around."

"I w-will," she promised him.
