Detention [Saturday]

All of the students who'd earned or been given detention had been told to meet Fraser outside of the Danger Shop. And that's precisely where he was.

"Good morning," he said pleasantly. "I trust you all slept well and I thank you for being on time. Please enter the Danger Shop."

It is now seven-oh-six. You have exactly eight hours and fifty-four minutes four hours and fifty four minutes to think about why you're here. To ponder the error of your ways and you may not talk. You will not move from these seats and you will not sleep.

"Before you begin your detention," Fraser said, looking down at them, "I would like to hope that we never meet again in this circumstance. I once met an Inuit elder who said that, those who get into trouble once learn from their mistakes. Those who get into trouble twice obviously have hard heads and deserve whatever trouble comes at them next."

He smiled and then gathered up each person's snacks before shooing them into the Danger Shop library.

[OCD is coming! done!]

"Barely," Cal admitted, rubbing his eyes with the heel of his palm a little before tilting his chair back a little as he reached for the airplane on the floor. He took a second to check it for damages before sending it back toward John's head; Cal's aim wasn't nearly as good as John's, but the throw wasn't really very enthusiastic, either. "You in here for no good reason, too?"

"I'd say my reasoning was good, just not the instructor's," John replied all nice and vague. "I take it you're a member of the lottery? I've been there a few times." He reached down to pick up the plane and fiddle with it.

Cal kept his attention on the airplane, hoping to catch any secondary launches that might occur in time enough to block it. "Yeah, I guess? I didn't know anything about it until today. All I know is that if I did anything, which I don't think I did, no one mentioned anything to me."

"Oh, you'd know if it was teacher assigned," John told him, eyes widening as he stared down at his plane and attempted to adjust the nose. "They get that look and sigh and tell you it's for your own good."

"Just like parents," Cal commented with a wry grin, although, thankfully, his experience with that whole approach was second-hand, through the disappointing steps of his older brother before him. Back then, though, Cal could do no wrong; it probably would have been a lot different in more recent years. "And now I want to know what the disagreement was over."

John shrugged, not sure about the parent thing. "Stupid assignment. I did it my own way and didn't feel like taking a do-over. Totally worth it." A devious smile crossed his face because really, it had been so incredibly worth it. "Completely, especially since this is the easiest detention ever."

"It's detention," Cal said, quirking a confused eyebrow at John. "How hard can it be?" Except maybe staying awake.

Poor Cal; of all the detentions to lose his Fandom detention virginity to...

"Well..." John wasn't so sure he should bother trying to explain what other detentions were like, but gave it a try anyway. "This one's not really a good example of detention here."

Frowning thoughtfully, Cal tried to remember what sort of detentions they got at Baker & Inglis, and he realized he didn't even know anyone who'd gotten detention there. Did they even have it? He supposed it would have depended on who you were: Charm Bracelets got off with a nice wag of the finger, everyone else got a wrap on the wrist or a medieval set of lines.

"Really? What else they make you do? Physical labor, community service type crap?"

"Depends on who's running it," John admitted, thinking back. "Like some people do battle scenarios - rescue the fake princess and all that - and others dress you in leather and make you commit crimes."

Yes, Cal stared at John for a moment. And then he shook his head.

"We've got a lot of messed up teachers at this school," was his final conclusion. "Doesn't it seem to sort of contradict the whole idea of a detention if they're going to expect you to misbehave further by participating?"

"Yeah, you go ahead and use reason to figure out something in Fandom," John snickered. "Tell me how that goes for you."

Cal rolled his eyes, but he grinned slightly, head still shaking. "Point taken," he conceded, while he tried to figure out if he was glad he didn't get the detention with the leather, or terribly disappointed.

One glance at their current setting and he knew it was most likely the latter.

"We could always make this detention more interesting," John pointed out, just to see where Cal stood on the issue.

Cal eyed John, clear intrigue, but an obvious though small amount of suspicion, in his look.

"You had anything in mind?"

John shrugged, leaning back in his chair. "Anything's better than just sitting around here waiting. 'Cause I'm certainly not writing an essay."

Re: Essay

[identity profile] not-a-mused.livejournal.com 2008-06-28 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Cal shrugged back; he wasn't so sure about that essay part. He already had the hatchlings of a pretty epic story going through his head about just who exactly he was. A complete and utter piece of fiction, of course, but perhaps the work that helps him breakout in that whole...writing thing he was trying.

"...There are books," he offered, although doubtful that John would be very won over by the prospect of how to pass the time. John didn't exactly seem like a book kind of guy. "I mean, this is in the Danger Shop, so this is all just a simulated library, isn't it? How detailed do you think they made it? Just the library, or a whole school?"

"Never know till we look," John said, eyes shining in excitement at the prospect. "Besides, I'm all read out for a while. A brisk walk might be nice. We could get the others to come along, maybe?"

Grinning briefly at John's eagerness for this idea, Cal looked the other boy straight on as he muttered, "Yeah. What's the worst that can happen?"

And, yes, that was sarcasm, muttered in the most enriched sardonic deadpan he could muster, which was pretty damn good.

"We could be really entertained (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomhigh/1809638.html?thread=112303078#t112303078)," John told him.
