All of the students who'd earned or been given detention had been told to meet Fraser outside of the Danger Shop. And that's precisely where he was.

"Good morning," he said pleasantly. "I trust you all slept well and I thank you for being on time. Please enter the Danger Shop."

It is now seven-oh-six. You have exactly ~~eight hours and fifty-four minutes~~ four hours and fifty four minutes to think about why you're here. To ponder the error of your ways and you may not talk. You will not move from these seats and you will not sleep.

"Before you begin your detention," Fraser said, looking down at them, "I would like to hope that we never meet again in this circumstance. I once met an Inuit elder who said that, those who get into trouble once learn from their mistakes. Those who get into trouble twice obviously have hard heads and deserve whatever trouble comes at them next."

He smiled and then gathered up each person's snacks before shooing them into the Danger Shop library.

Right, because with Fraser gone John was going to actually sit quietly and think about what he'd done, let alone write an essay. He started building an intricate paper airplane to throw at people who were.

Ino glanced at him dubiously. "How intricate can you seriously get in a paper airplane?"

John glanced up at her and replied, "Very."

"Is there a class or something that taught you that?" Ino had to ask. "Or did you just figure it out yourself?"

What? It was either talk, or be bored. Not a lot of options there.

"It's just simple aerodynamics," John told her. "No need for a class when you can practice."

"Don't the regular ones fly well enough?" She leaned back in her chair. "I mean, I've never had a problem with the usual ones."

He paused, looking his plane over. "I find advanced flight more...interesting," John said finally.

"They don't have any flight where I'm from," she explained, "so I don't really know anything about it."

"Really?" John was shocked. Everyone around here seemed to have some sort of airborne transport that was either significantly better than what he was used to or at least as good.

"Really really. None," she said, wrinkling her nose cheerfully. "So, yeah, anything that can fly is totally not something I know 'bout."

"So you never even had paper airplanes?" John asked.

"We did," she said ~~because canon is screwy that way~~, "but that's about the extent of what we've got."

"Amazing that no one bothered to go beyond the paper," he was having a difficult time imagining this.

"Ooooh!" Kaylee tilted her head, watching him. "I ain't never seen one that complicated."

John brightened at the compliment. "It has to for its very specific purpose," he told her.

"Please don't throw it at me?" she requested. "Somethin' that complex might hurt."

"Nah," John shook his head. "You seem nice. And you're talking. I'm all about catching people off guard."

"Oooh. And thanks. You're John, right? You're the reason I have detention," she said good-naturedly.

"How's that?" John asked confusedly.

"I didn't wanna crash 'cause it didn't seem right, but he had to give me detention 'cause he gave it to you and to Jaina. Which don't make much sense to me but I ain't the teacher," Kaylee shrugged. "'Least it ain't too bad for a detention, I guess."

"Well, sorry 'bout that," John said. "I didn't feel the need to choose my own death for a class assignment and he seemed to take offense to that." And your attitude, John.

"Ain't nothin' wrong with that," Kaylee agreed. "I mean, that was part o'why I didn't do it. Known too many boys who decided to go joyridin' like idiots and crashed. Kinda heavy for summer camp, right?"

"Kinda heavy for anyone who'd come to this school," John decided. "But at least this detention isn't bad so much as boring." There was a bright side.

"Is it normally bad?" she wondered.

"Depends on how much you like leather. Or newts."
