Inside Out -- Class 7, Period 2 [Tuesday]

Juli did not particularly approve of having food in class, but nonetheless, today there were various moddable snacks of varying degrees of healthiness and she, herself, was nibbling on a carrot stick. And drinking her coffee, of course.

Always with the coffee these days.

“Welcome to your class with me for this term,” she said, once everyone had gathered, “please, help yourself to the food, sit back, and each of you tell me one thing that you’ve learned this term--whether in my classroom or not—that had it’s origins in another world.”

She gestured to a student at random. “Begin.”

[Wait for the OCD is up!]

Giselle thought for a moment then raised her hand. "I met some lovely little fellows! Their names were Pain and Panic."

She paused. "Well. Yes. Poor little Pain didn't know how to tell his friend he loved him."

Giselle clasped her hands together, so, so, so thrilled that Ms. Mizrahi understood. "Yes! I did! And we sent him flowers!"

"I do hope so," Giselle said. "He was quite a nice little creature. I think he and his friend might have been treated badly though. I do hope they ended up somewhere happily. I never saw Panic again after he took me to that little room."

"There are people who apparently don't like fish or fish sauce. That was a new one to me," said Hoshi. "In a way, it was a bit more shocking than finding out I had to use money."

Hoshi made sure to snag a cupcake for herself.

"Fish is a staple for us in Japan," said Hoshi. "I never would have considered that people found it disgusting until I saw people making faces at one of the dishes in my foodie workshop."

"If they had a grandmother like mine, they ate fish or went hungry," said Hoshi with a smirk.

"When I was little, my grandmother would serve me cold soba noodles. I hated them," said Hoshi. "I used to make up excuses like having a tummy ache so I could get out of eating them. Now soba noodles are one of my favorite things to eat. So there may be people at home who don't like fish, but it's so prevalent in the cuisine that eventually, they find something with fish that they like."

"I think so," said Hoshi. "Most people are turned off by a strange ingredient, but if they don't know it's there, they'll give the food a try. I wouldn't have tried kishka if I knew how they made it."

"It's a sausage that's very popular in Eastern Europe," explained Hoshi. "They make it with pig's blood and use pig intestines as the casing."

"It didn't taste bad, but it wasn't good either," said Hoshi. "I had enough to satisfy my hostess, and then I moved onto the cabbage rolls for the rest of the meal."
