Arts & Crafts, Monday [6-23], Period 2, Front Lawn of the School

After checking himself out of the clinic, Steve stood at the edge of a large, tarp-covered area as he waited for the students to assemble. He was dressed in paint-splattered sweats and a t-shirt with 'ARMY' emblazoned across the chest, and grinning broadly, despite the already-fading bruises on his face. In the middle of the tarps was a large piece of canvas, firmly secured to the ground. Around the perimeter was a lot of paint of many colors in various delivery devices. There were paint-filled Super Soakers and water pistols, paint balloons, and pans of paint. The students had been handwavily notified to wear clothes they wouldn't mind ruining and meet him here.

"Now, I know it's been a very busy and stressful weekend. So I thought you'd like something fun and silly for our final workshop together. So we will be working on a piece of collaborative art. Which is to say...

"PAINT FIGHT!"

Poor thing.

Johnny's was not out. Johnny was having fun. It was an energy release that he sorely needed, especially if he was going to get through the rest of his day.

"I see you!" he sing-songed and came barreling around her tree, firing away.

And Hoshi got covered in paint. "Alright, you got me, and I'm out of paint," she said with a chuckle, putting her hands up.

"Yes, you did," said Hoshi, wiping the paint off her face. "This was fun! It's too bad we don't have paint fights in more classes, though I'll probably need a shower after this."

"I could always burn mine off but then I would be standing here naked. And I'm sure you'd rather not see that."

"Oh, I wouldn't mind," said Hoshi.

She paused.

"But burning paint doesn't sound like a good thing, right?" she added, her face turning pink.

"I would burn it off," he clarified, his eyes full of amusement.

"But paint is flammable, right?" asked Hoshi. "It would be one big fireball. Of course, you'd probably survive that, but..."

She was trying to ignore how warm she was feeling.

Johnny just grinned. "Sweetheart, I can go Supernova. I can burn anything, and anything flammable I just absorb."

"That would, um, definitely make clean-up easier," said Hoshi. "Think I'll stick with soap and water myself."

What? Johnny could say stuff if he wanted.

Which brought that mental image back into Hoshi's mind. "Yeah, because clothes are flammable, aren't they? And that would be a bad thing. I know, because I had to walk back to the dorms naked that one time, and it was not a lot of fun because all these squirrels were staring and taking notes, even if it did get me an A in Barney's class and, um, I'll shut up now."

He laughed. "Hey, nothing wrong with nudity," he said, not having an ounce of modesty. "If you got it, flaunt it. Just... I think Mr. Rogers might demand I find something to put on, you know?"

"Well, yeah," said Hoshi, still blushing. "And, um, your girlfriend might have an issue with that too."

His smile instantly fell and Johnny dropped his eyes from her. "Yeah, well... I wouldn't be so sure about that."

Hoshi had definitely noticed earlier that Savannah and Johnny were not as talkative as usual. "Did you want to talk about what happened?" she asked.

He shrugged. "Not really. I mean, no sense in boring you with relationship shit."

Hoshi shrugged. "It's not boring to me," she said. "Besides, Robin is gone for the summer and Doom... well, I wouldn't mind listening to someone else's problems for a while."

Johnny hated the name 'Doom' so he cringed a little when she said it.

Still. "I didn't want her to get involved this weekend. She did and she got hurt. She rescued people, and I'm damn proud of her for it, but... I don't like it, didn't like it. And we argued."

"Well, she's her own person. It's not like you could lock her in a cage to keep her from getting hurt. And if you did, she'd probably hate it," Hoshi pointed out.

Yeah, Johnny wouldn't mention that in all his idiotic glory, that he tied her to the bed. It was on the radio anyway.

"No. I can't. But I don't have to be there when she doesn't come back."

It's good that he didn't mention that, because Hoshi would give him a really good lecture if he did.

"What do you think that would accomplish, not being there?" asked Hoshi.

"But then you miss the good stuff as well as the bad," said Hoshi. "With any relationship, you get to enjoy the fun parts, but you also take on the risk of having your heart broken when he runs off to Mars or has to go back to running his own country."
