Networking to Success, Class 6, Wed, Period 1 (6/18/08)

"Today we're going to practice using your networking skills," Nathan said. "Pretend that you're putting together a charity event to benefit all the teal deer who were made homeless thanks to last weekend's volcano. You need to figure out what kind of event to have and how you can make it happen for the least amount of cost but greatest amount of benefit to the charity.

"You all have the same goal, but different talents. Do your best to pair up with as many of your classmates as possible so you can bring the most to the table. Try to make it good, because once you've figured out your event you need to present it to your sponsor." Nathan gestured towards where Lana was sitting. "If she doesn't like it she won't put her company's weight behind it, and without her you won't have nearly as much donations or free publicity. She's going to want to see creative events that bring a lot to the table, so anyone who approaches her without at least one partner is probably not going to succeed.

"Get started and I'm here if you have any questions."

Mac paused by Romeo's desk as she looked for potential partnering options.

"Are you a technological sort of a person?" she asked. If he wasn't, that implied he might need networking for that aspect, and bingo. Useful melding of talents.

"I can check my email, that's the limit of my skills," Romeo answered. "Are you?"

"Yup." She smiled, and held out a hand. Trying to remember all those tips from the first class. "I'm Mac," she told him.

"Romeo," he answered, smiling as he shook her hand. "I was vaguely thinking of a charity costume ball, but I don't know if that would be too expensive."

"If you can get the right people to donate, and sell tickets at the right price..." Mac said thoughtfully. "I don't see why it would be a problem."

"It would just be a matter of selling enough tickets," Romeo agreed. "I can find a venue and entertainment, if you plan a budget and Internet promotions that would draw in the curious."

"That is definitely my side of things," Mac said with a cheerful nod. "This networking thing, not as hard as you'd think it might be."

"Not at all -- it seems it's all about being willing to talk, and say what one is good at and what one needs help with," Romeo readily agreed.

"You think we need anyone else to cover all the bases here?" she asked. "We've got the finance and internet stuff with me, and the party planning side for you... Is there anything else?"
withoutverona: (Kiss me)

"Maybe." Romeo rubbed his eyes. "Oh! Unless you want to do it, someone to handle the details the night of the party," he suggested. "Supervise the door, watch the bartenders and waiters, keep things running smoothly. I can do that if there's no one in class who wants to join us."

Mac scrunched her face a little. "I'm... not really a people organising person," she admitted. "I don't think I'd be any good."

"Then I shall do it," Romeo promised, a bit apprehensive. "I am not so much a details person, but if we get volunteers, or if I'm motivated, I could manage, It fits with planning anyhow."
