Networking to Success, Class 6, Wed, Period 1 (6/18/08)

"Today we're going to practice using your networking skills," Nathan said. "Pretend that you're putting together a charity event to benefit all the teal deer who were made homeless thanks to last weekend's volcano. You need to figure out what kind of event to have and how you can make it happen for the least amount of cost but greatest amount of benefit to the charity.

"You all have the same goal, but different talents. Do your best to pair up with as many of your classmates as possible so you can bring the most to the table. Try to make it good, because once you've figured out your event you need to present it to your sponsor." Nathan gestured towards where Lana was sitting. "If she doesn't like it she won't put her company's weight behind it, and without her you won't have nearly as much donations or free publicity. She's going to want to see creative events that bring a lot to the table, so anyone who approaches her without at least one partner is probably not going to succeed.

"Get started and I'm here if you have any questions."

Romeo had a few ideas for this, many of which were probably more expensive than Nathan wanted.

He started making a list of things he would need for a costume ball while he waited for a partner.

Mac paused by Romeo's desk as she looked for potential partnering options.

"Are you a technological sort of a person?" she asked. If he wasn't, that implied he might need networking for that aspect, and bingo. Useful melding of talents.

"I can check my email, that's the limit of my skills," Romeo answered. "Are you?"

"Yup." She smiled, and held out a hand. Trying to remember all those tips from the first class. "I'm Mac," she told him.

"Romeo," he answered, smiling as he shook her hand. "I was vaguely thinking of a charity costume ball, but I don't know if that would be too expensive."

"If you can get the right people to donate, and sell tickets at the right price..." Mac said thoughtfully. "I don't see why it would be a problem."

"It would just be a matter of selling enough tickets," Romeo agreed. "I can find a venue and entertainment, if you plan a budget and Internet promotions that would draw in the curious."

"That is definitely my side of things," Mac said with a cheerful nod. "This networking thing, not as hard as you'd think it might be."

"Not at all -- it seems it's all about being willing to talk, and say what one is good at and what one needs help with," Romeo readily agreed.

"You think we need anyone else to cover all the bases here?" she asked. "We've got the finance and internet stuff with me, and the party planning side for you... Is there anything else?"
withoutverona: (Kiss me)

Re: Talk & Network!

[personal profile] withoutverona 2008-06-19 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"Maybe." Romeo rubbed his eyes. "Oh! Unless you want to do it, someone to handle the details the night of the party," he suggested. "Supervise the door, watch the bartenders and waiters, keep things running smoothly. I can do that if there's no one in class who wants to join us."

Mac scrunched her face a little. "I'm... not really a people organising person," she admitted. "I don't think I'd be any good."
withoutverona: (I see my destiny)

Re: Talk & Network!

[personal profile] withoutverona 2008-06-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Then I shall do it," Romeo promised, a bit apprehensive. "I am not so much a details person, but if we get volunteers, or if I'm motivated, I could manage, It fits with planning anyhow."

Cimorene had a few ideas already, and was looking around to see who she could partner up with.

"Hey, you need a partner?" Chris asked.

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Cimorene glanced up. "Sure! Any ideas yet?"

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, the only talents I really have that might raise some money around here are the magical sort," Chris admitted. "Do you have any ideas?"

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Are you a magician?" Cimorene inquires, curious. "And I was thinking either a dinner party of some sort or a sports event."

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
"No, I'm a witch," Chris said. "Hmmm... those aren't bad ideas, but are they creative enough to pass muster?"

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Cimorene blinked. "But you're a guy. And well, it could be a mascaraed ball."

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, witches can be male or female where I'm from," Chris explained. "A masquerade ball could be fun."

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Spelling hard. "Oh, that does explain it. Maybe have it be themed after books?"

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] neurotic-witch.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Chris's eyes lit up in geekish glee.

"Ooooh, I like that," he said.

*pats you onna head*

Dick was ready for networking. "Hi, I'm Dick. Have any great ideas?"

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] makescherries.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
"Prince Cimorene of Linderwall." Cimorene said formally before dropping to a more casual tone. "And I believe some sort of a dinner party is fairly traditional, or perhaps a sports event."

Re: Talk & Network!

[identity profile] laidanegg.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I like the sports event idea," Dick said. "We could probably get the gym for free, and if we do basketball or something, we'd only need a dozen people to put on the show for people. That would help keep costs down quite a bit."

"I've got funding!" Turtle declared, right off the bat, because that was important in any event and it was always the thing she knew for sure she could really, really help with.

"And paper products, too!"

...That, too.
