Courtly Dancing and Defence: Week 4, Period 4

Aly had taken over the music room for their classes from now on, and she was just setting up the speakers as the students came in.  "Afternoon, guys," she said lightly, turning to face them.  "I hope you're all enjoying our tropical paradise."

"Today we're going to focus on a dance you all need to know if you don't already - the waltz.  It's incredibly easy, even if you have two left feet because it's basically steps on the count of three."

She ran through a quick demonstration of the basic steps, counting out loud.  "Any questions?"  Once they all were answered, Aly nodded, hitting the play button on her music.  "Then grab a partner and try it out.  Try to work with a few different partners if you can - it's good to get used to dancing with all different types."

Andrew walked towards Seregil. "Care to dance?" he asked, completely awkwardly.

Andrew stood there for a moment and scratched his head. "I've, um, I never learned how to lead," he stated with a shrug.

"That's okay," Seregil told him, holding out his hand to Andrew. "I have. I won't steer you wrong."

Andrew grinned and took the offered hand. "Have you waltzed before?"

"Not exactly," Seregil said. "But I've done similar dances."

"I've done it before," Andrew said with a nod. "But it was a while ago. I'm sure you'll pick it up quickly." He concentrated really hard on not stepping on Seregil's toes.

Andrew took a deep breath. "Easier said than done," he mumbled. He smiled apologetically. "I've been a little on edge," he added, doing his best not to glance over at Liir.

Seregil caught the halted glance. "Problems?" he asked softly.

"We broke up and now he apparently gets some kind of pleasure out of killing mice named Andrew." There was a slight hitch in his voice and just a touch of disbelief.

Seregil frowned. "Now that's completely uncalled for."

"It was just... unexpected," he replied. "I was really thinking I had made a big mistake, but now..." He shrugged.

Seregil glanced over at Liir, still frowning. "Maybe I should have a talk with him."

Andrew totally missed a step. "Sorry," he said quickly. "But, no, I just want it to be, you know, over. And," he smiled slightly, "thank you."

Seregil nodded. "Some people obviously don't know a good thing when they have it."

"They really don't," Andrew replied before allowing the statement to sink in. Then he turned a light shade of pink. "I mean, uh..." He really didn't know what to say to that.

Seregil chuckled. "You meant exactly what you said. As did I."

"But it was my fault," he said quietly. "I was the one who ended it." His eyes were focused squarely on Seregil's shoulder. "So maybe in a way, I deserve it, right?"

"I don't think so," Seregil said. "Unless you were using him or were deliberately cruel."

Andrew thought a moment before saying, "It was just a big mess. And it was the hardest thing I've ever done." It wasn't easy walking away from someone you loved.

Andrew snorted. "The idea would worry me a lot less if I didn't know it was actually possible," he replied. Sometimes, reading the old tomes of dark magic, was a bad thing.

Andrew really didn't know what to think at this point, but he didn't want to cause any further problems with Liir. "I'm sure it's just his way of coping," he said. "Some people write angry blogs and some people torture little animals." And, amazingly, that perspective wasn't helping at all.

On the other hand, the dancing seemed to be going quite smoothly.
